I have the same concerns, not only it looks out of place but can get you a ticket in some places for obstructed view.
Now, if they had a discreet version without the screen, I would be all over that. But for now personally it is not appealing to me.

Seriously, do we really need another screen in the car? Lol
I highly doubt this would violate the obstructed view statutes as the device isn't that big. Plus, most of those statutes have exceptions for navigation or vehicle functions.

Main screen, driver screen, CarPlay screen, phone screen, and OpenPilot screen. Sounds like a good start.

Since the Comma 3x hooks up under the dash in the Rivian and not inder the mirror housing like other models, does it still have to be mounted up under the mirror, or can it be mounted lower on the windshield? I think it would obstruct the view less that way. I use a Comma on my wife’s explorer and it’s amazing in every way, but it does create a decent blind spot in that car.

Everything in the documentation says it needs to be high and perfectly centered/level. It needs the best view possible.

There seems to be a little confusion as to why the display needs to be high up on the windshield and centered.

Sure, there's a display facing the driver, but the Comma AI unit itself has cameras that need to be located where they can see the road and see the driver. The part of the system that's under the dash isn't where those are located (obviously), and it's not tying into the built-in single camera. There are three cameras on the Comma AI unit: two that face forward on the back side of the display, and one that faces the driver. Even if there wasn't a display, you would need the cameras positioned where they are, and part of the electronics goes with them. See the front and back views here: https://comma.ai/shop/comma-3x.

To clarify, there's no getting around the need to put the display up where it goes because that's where the cameras need to go.

as others have said it needs to be high and centered.

Just adding that I really don't think it obstructs anything, i was worried about it too but given the angle of vision and where this thing is, it doesn't come close to getting in the way for me at all. Melts away into the rear view assembly, great vision all around. I'm 5'11", you would have to be quite a bit taller for viewing angle to start getting in the way.

This will sound silly to some, as it elevates form over function, but I really hate the idea of affixing a phone sized controller to my windshield under the already bulky rearview mirror assembly. But that's really the only drawback I see here, and once the speed functionality is resolved, it will be hard to resist pulling the trigger despite the eyesore element.

Has anybody received updates on their comma order / harness? I ordered Feb 26 and it said 4-6 weeks for delivery at the time, so hopefully it comes within the next 2'ish weeks!

I read in Discord last week that they hoped to get the Tesla harnesses in this week and start shipping those. Supposedly, the Rivian harness were to follow next week with shipping at that time. But I’ve not seen any additional updates.

This was posted on Discord 3/18.

I have this sitting in my cart but would like to know two more things before purchasing. First, my main gripe in my Gen 1 R1T is the fact that significant portions of the highway I use it on are not yet "mapped" by Rivian and Driver+ is only available for maybe 20% of the route. Does anyone know if Rivian is doing anything to rapidly add to the amount of highways they have mapped? While comma looks to be way better than Driver+ already in many ways, I would not invest if I knew that Driver+ would be available for all of highway 52 between Rochester MN and Minneapolis in the next year. Second, since I suspect the answer to the above will convince me I should just buy it, is there any sort of group buy or discount via this forum or elsewhere?

Hey fellow rochesterite,

Hey 52 and Driver+ inconsistency annoys me to no end. I suspect it's not just future mapping, but that every time there is construction and Rivian notes the abberancy, they deactivate that portion of the highway; it then takes forever to get remapped. Since there is construction every summer there, rinse and repeat. Maybe remapping will get faster with more Rivian's driving it, I don't know.

I bought comma and using it right now to drive 52. Life changing; flawless the whole way. Even just the hands free aspect alone, IMO, is worth it for the reduced body/shoulder fatigue on longer drives. And you can use it on non-divided highways, which may never come to driver+ on our gen 1s.

Just buy it. Money well spent for me.

I've driving that road a bunch of time. Good like with Driver+. Even in Dallas on major highways, as soon as there is some construction, Driver+ chokes. As mentioned elsewhere, I have issues were Driver+ now calls an overpass a tunnel and tells me to take over.

I gave up and so much happier with Comma 3X. I won't go back to Driver+. Even having to work with the current ACC, it is so much better and smoother, and seems to work most places I need it. There are still working on the steering wheel torque to handle more corner cases but the build I am now is much better than just a week ago in handling the corner cases in my area.

Think some of the tighter turns on the great river road or taking 95 along the St. Croix River up through Stillwater and north. Or from Prescott down the WI side to Red Wing. By comparison, 52 will be a piece of cake even with all the road construction they seem to do.

You will never see any meaningful updates to Driver+. Gen 1 ADAS development is dead.

Yeah - that sure feels like it's the case. Super disappointing. :(
Yeah, in the last three years, the ONLY positive update was the auto-resume after changing lanes.
