RJ just said this:

“Today on an R1 you can get on the highway and take your hands off the wheel, and the vehicle drives itself. That’s going to expand from highways to point-to-point so you get in your car in your driveway, put in an address, and it drives itself. Then we expand from there to not just hands off point-to-point, but hands off, eyes off where you can take your hands off the wheel and eyes off the road.”

With lidar and radar, anything is possible. I look forward to upgrading to the gen 2 quad...whenever that comes out.

though I seldom use it (seems to only be available in my area on the interstate highways) glad they can/will implement the technology

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
"Hands off, eyes off" is a bold claim that I have serious concerns about him making without proper caveats. I get that people want future statements to bolster valuation, but call it what it is - L3, L4, or L5 - if it's actually in the pipeline.

Lest people get confused:

Rivian R1T R1S RJ: Rivian ADAS will expand to Tesla style FSD - full self driving on highway and roads (from driveway to destination) 1747072549485-kz

The R1 doesn't have LiDAR.

Did you listen to the clip? He said level 3 (which is hands off eyes off). Personally I think eyes-off level 3 could be extremely problematic. Having to take over in a situation where you're aware of nothing? No thank you.

Someone should make a driving simulator game where you're dumped into these situations without any knowledge of what or why you're being given control.

Ah, poop - foiled again by laziness. No, I did not listen, will do so now. Thx for the clarification, and agree that eyes-off is a bad claim to make, though "regular" L3 is pretty achievable. Wonder if they'll use what Mobileeye has built, or completely in-house ...

Just an edit to add that SAE does in fact say eyes-off is peachy for L3, which I fundamentally disagree with, because to many, that means "asleep" or not paying attention at all.

Isn't FSD, Eyes free driving and this autonomy discussion the exact opposite of the brand identity of an overly capable adventure vehicle with inviting and luxury interior spaces?

I get it (hopefully) moves the stock price..but is it good for the company.

FSD is tech that should be made available for people with special needs, who otherwise lacked access to mobility, not for a bunch of dorks who want to use the tech just because they can. All we able bodied people need is lane centering, adaptive cruise , I'll allow hands free to be in this list to reduce driver fatigue.

I can't wait to take my Rivian to Moab and let the truck do all of the hard parts by itself.

No, FSD is "supervised", i.e. it's still an eyes-on SAE Level 2 system.

I wasn't talking about Tesla specific "FSD" i was speaking to full self driving capabilities reaching SAE lvl 3 or higher.
