I was reading an article about self-driving tech in China developing and operating for pennies on the dollar compared to Tesla there, and even beginning to do a better job...

Anywho, it mentioned parallel parking which got me thinking, when the heck is Rivian going to launch parallel parking assistant? This has been a standard since like 2018, so even with its 2019 cameras, Gen1 Rivians should be able to accomplish this with ease.

Was this ever a promised feature? Have Gen1s been shorted so many features that we just missed this one?

The few times I've seen these self-park features in action they were really slow to complete the task. Much slower than a human would take to do the same thing.

I think the tech available on the Gen 1 is sufficient. Pull up next to the space you want to parallel park in , put it in reverse, and you get a nice 360 degree view of the space around the truck. Then close to finishing and you wan to see how close to the curb you are, turn on the side-view cam and verify.

Don't believe it was ever promised. I've never seen it mentioned or talked about by anyone.
I also don't think its needed. I've had it on a previous car and it was so stinking slow I never used it. Especially with the 360 camera we have, even on the gen1, self parking isn't needed.

IIRC, way back Wassym’s response was “interesting” and “possible”. But never said it’s on the dev roadmap.

Ford has had this since mid 2010s without cameras. It does both parallel and perpendicular parking (including notifying you that it found a suitable spot as you drive by). It turns the wheel as you modulate the brake or shift from R to D..... All just using parking sensors. It works really well and also also exits the spot.

Pretty bummed Rivian is not capable of this, it doesn't seem very difficult. Even more amazing if they automatically moved the car at 1mph and just let you modulate brake.

I never use it in my other car, faster to just park manually than tapping on screen, lining it up exactly the way the computer wants and then still controlling the pedals also the angle it takes while parking is too close for curb rash so rather not take that chance.

My F150 had active park. I used it a couple of times to see it work. But overall it was just too slow, I could parallel park faster.

In MD they dropped parallel parking from the drivers test a few years ago.

I had a couple of Ford Explorers that did this. I remember using it once with a car full of people on a group date night in the city not long after getting the car, we were all very impressed. Never used it again.

I remember seeing this article last year about it being phased out from many brands because nobody else uses it or cares. https://www.theautopian.com/whatever-happened-with-cars-parking-themselves/

I also remember hear this year that Ford is phasing it out of all models because "everyone thinks it is neat, but nobody really cares about it"

Agree with some of the comments. Whilst the tech typically works well, it is very SLOW to complete the maneuver, so in real world situations it would be more cumbersome to do than just park it yourself.
I consider it a show piece (personally) for when you’re in a quiet area and want to show the “old” people what your car/truck can do haha.
