Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I was low probability hoping 2026 would bring 800V charging. Guess not.
They’re not going to deviate from what they’ve already developed and created supply chains for, except to simplify things and make them more cost-effective and vertically integrated where possible.

They’ll revisit the R1 a few years from now even though it’ll be less relevant to their overall sales. In the meantime it’s all hands on deck for R2 (2026), then R3X (2028), and finally R3 (2030).

Nice - it comes with NACS and the AT's only cost about 10 miles range.
Need to go look at the documents, but it looks like it’s a 10 mile range hit when compared with the UHP 22’s (which I’m assuming are the staggered Michelins). Did they not submit with the standard 22s?

Yes delusional to think they would switch to 800v when they are trying to make a profit and use their existing architecture and supply chains.

In the doc it says the test results for those are pending.

Are there any 400 kW or higher RAN chargers? I think they might all be 300 kW. Which means even if they switch the R1s to 800V, their own charging network can't take full advantage of it. On the other hand, a 50% increase in charging speed would be very nice.

Part of the press release that Rivian put out when announcing that the RAN network was opening to all EVs was that they would be able to push 900v (part of the new, taller charging pedestal that are getting swapped out). Don't know what the amperage is, but they at least planned ahead when starting this transition.

Rivian will be out of business or acquired by 2030 at this rate. Their product won’t sell in Europe, elsewhere without 800v. And in the US, they’ll continue to face strong competition from incumbent OEMs.

BMW’s new EV platform coming out across their entire line up has 800V, up to 400kw charging, and great range.

At some point, even US consumers will start comparing and make their choices. It doesn’t matter whether one “needs” 400v. It’ll be like a horsepower contest, where all else equal, consumers will choose the one with the higher horsepower.

The existing stations do up to 900v. They have 500a cables. R1 batteries are 450v, hence 225kw max. The rest of the switch gear seems to limit to 300kw (kva) instead of 450kw (kva).

Didn't know that, thanks! I was going off of the press release Rivian put out back in December.

I agree 800v would be good but to think they would do it one year after coming out with a Gen 2 was just fanciful. They need to have better cooling of their battery packs - charging speed is the key thing (area under the curve not just the max).

That's the major benefit of 800v; you can charge at a lower amperage for the same rate, while keeping the temperatures lower.

It’s also 4 years after their first 2022 R1 release. I get that Rivian is a new car manufacturer. But, for their top of the line flagship vehicle, it also seems reasonable that Rivian could start introducing 800v about now.

Speaking for myself, if Rivian introduced 800v charging in 2026 for R1, I’d upgrade right away. I bet a lot of 2022-23 owners would too. At this point, I’m leaning toward getting a refund on my $3K quad max deposit and just driving my 2023 R1T quad large. Perhaps put the $3k toward an extended warranty.
