I really don't understand this roof shade dilemma. It seems like a total pain, and it's such an eyesore.

A high-quality tint job will reduce the heat dramatically, and you still get the benefit of the panoramic glass.

I've had zero issues with multiple Teslas, and a Sierra Denali EV.
Some people like the glass roof as-is in certain conditions (like winter) and want to block everything in others (like summer). People who want the increased sun in winter probably won’t be happy with tint.

@MidnightRivian - I am interested in a grey set for a Gen 2 R1S. Do you have an idea what the cost will be?
Thanks

Hi, I'd be interested in a black for a 25 R1 if still possible. I know there is tariff uncertainty, but would like to know a ball park if you have one. Thanks

Thanks all for your replies. I've put an order in for 20 shades (5 of each color and each model) and will see what the final cost will come to once I get the bill from customs. I am told it will take about 20 days from door to door. I will keep everyone posted on the delivery status once it gets to US.

My goal is to price the new shades which fit better and have couple extra upgrades to ensure stability / anti-sag at the same price as existing vendors who currently sell shades between $80 for truck and $100 - $120 for SUV with shipping and tax.

I am hoping the first set of shades on the forum will be lower than that because I would like to get some more feedback and also because I will ship it on my own versus using Amazon fulfillment service which charges a higher fee.

The reason why I personally went with the Sunshade and agree with what others said is because I want to have control on how much light I let in and how much heat I let in. I don't want to tint the roof and trap heat or worry about warranty. I like the ability to be able to remove the black shade and put the grey shade to bring in more light in the cabin or remove them completely on cloudy / gloomy days.

I would 100% recommend quality ceramic tint on front windows and clear ceramic on front windshield too. Those make a huge difference while driving along with the roof sun shade which blocks light from hitting me in my eyes when I wear my glasses and heat on my head when I don't wear a hat.

I would go one step further and get a windshield shade (Rivian / Covercraft) for when you are parked which helps to protect the dash and keep sunlight out when parked. The last thing I did was also ceramic tint all the rear and back windows for the rear passenger comfort and to help the AC from having to work overtime in triple digit temps while parked outdoors.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I installed the Hansshow one on my 23 R1S and found that there is definitely a front and rear orientation. It fits tightly and no light comes through. It is unwieldy to install so I haven't removed it in over a year. I wish Rivian had installed a motorized shade. I would have gladly taken that over the useless camp speaker.
The R1 line should definitely have a motorized sun shade given the price. Too bad the Gen 1 sunroof can’t be upgraded to the Gen 2’s chromatic glass. I’ve heard that really helps.

What’s the point of having a sun roof anyway? Who wants the sun beating down on them even with tinted UV glass, especially in the summer and if you’re going on a long trip? It must be cheaper for manufacturers to do glass vs metal or something or they wouldn’t all be doing it.

I think the glass has 2 benefits for the manufacturer. Easier to use robots to load the interior build out with a huge opening at the top and for the consumer the glass makes the vehicle feel premium / luxury.

I am not to sure how much weight if any is saved by using glass instead of steel for the roof on an EV.

With a windshield sunshade up, and the ability to remotely vent the windows and run the AC, I see no need to cover the pano roof, even in the Texas summer.

It’s not for only when parked. It’s for when driving. Sun beating down on you all day during road trips sucks.

Hey there @MidnightRivian, thx for doing this. I am interested in a grey set for a Gen 2 R1S.
Thanks! I will make sure to save a set for you.

I am looking forward to the grey set as well for my Ocean Coast interior and want to compare it to the black sunshade I have currently.

I want to see how much difference if any is noticed between cabin brightness using black shades versus grey shades.

Both of them do a solid job blocking the sun from beating down on you while you drive and help with bringing down temps when parked outdoors.

Hi @MidnightRivian please count me in for a Gen 2 R1S Grey set. Thanks!

I will save a set for you.

I just picked up a loaner Rivian R1S while getting the HVAC campaign performed and the first thing I noticed while driving in 92 degree temps is the sun hitting my head from the roof since I am always use to driving around with a sun shade.

I remember exactly why I would always get annoyed driving around afternoon time with no sun shade when the sun is right above you.

This is why I spent almost 2 years trying to design/create a sunshade that fits and functions correctly and one I am willing to buy in bulk / scale / gift to local members.

The first thing I plan to do for the loaner with black interior is throw a roof shade in to help keep the cabin cool and stop the sun from bugging me during the day time or afternoon time while driving.

Hi @MidnightRivian I'm in for a Gen 2 R1S Black set. Thanks!
@MidnightRivian Please count me in for one R1S Black (G1) if this allows highway driving with all windows down and the shade doesn't clip out.

Done and Done.

Now before I send out even a single shade, my goal is to do a 85 mph test with all windows down to make sure not only do the clips not pop out but the shade doesn't flop around.

Last time I did this with my new fitted shade, the clips and shade stayed in place but the fabric would flop around and that was annoying. The fix I have for the fabric to stay in place should take care of the issue at high speeds. The complete set which I will ship out will come with new redesigned almost pressure fitted headliner with redesigned clips and a fix to help with fabric from flopping around.

I will keep you posted on the extra fix / upgrades that I have in place to help with stability at high speeds once I get the new shades and test them out.
