I am a new R1S owner (Dune edition).

I will be going on an extended trip, and the vehicle will be parked in a garage without being connected to a battery.

How much drain should I expect? Should I charge it to 100% before flying out?

Expect ~ 2% per day (24 hours) with GG on, maybe a little less with it off (if it's secured in your own garage). You will loose more if you mess with the app and "wake" the vehicle often. I believe there is a "shipping" setting which should preserve the state of charge a little better and might work for you.

Shipping mode will preserve the most battery, but if you charge to 80-100% you will be fine. Try not to obsess while remote by excessively waking it up.

Some will say don’t let your vehicle sit with a high SOC, and they’re right. But it’s far better than the unpleasant return to 0%.

I'm guessing you mean charger?
Can you use your level 1 charger and just plug it in to the wall? Then you could just leave your charge set to 70% and not have to worry at all.

With GG off at home I lose about 0.5% a day. Lost about 8% on a 2 week trip.
Edited to say this is the base battery on a gen2 dual

Not sure if there is consensus on here about Gen 2 vampire drain. Based on several years of forum posts I would expect anywhere from 0.5% per day to 3% per day. But Gen 2 is supposed to be better than Gen 1.

So, here is my plan after speaking with Rivian one more time.

1. Charge to 100 and place the vehicle in Shipping mode.
2. Rivian said that if it’s dead, they will come out and replace the battery at an estimated cost of 800-1000.

alternatively, I may leave a key card with a friend and ask them to check in on it at 15days and if it’s critically low, drive it to a Tesla station that’s close by to recharge it to full.

Expect 1.5kWh/day loss. 30 days = 45kWh loss, so no problem if charged to full.

To ease your mind, I live in Italy six months of the year. I go in two three-month segments. So my truck sits unused for three months at a time twice a year. It's always been unplugged. Once a month my daughter plugs it in to charge it to 80%. I would lose 1.3 to 1.5 percent per day. Charge it to 80% and don't worry about it. :)

Data confirming: R1S Gen 2: gone 17 days, in shipping mode, charge % went from 83% to 58% = 1.5% per day. Nobody nearby had a key and so no unlocking or other behavior in the meantime.

Surprised someone from Rivian would tell you to charge your NMC pack to 100% and just let it sit for 30 days.

You should be able to tell now how much you lose per day. With my gen 1, with proximity and Gear Guard off, it’s loses about 1% per day.

Rivian said they can't guarantee that it won't drain to 0. They weren't very helpful.

Charging a NMC pack to 100% and letting it sit is just bad for battery chemistry. As I pointed to, as is, you should be able to tell how much SOC you lose overnight, with or without proximity and GG. And that's better than polling strangers who park in different climate than you, since ambient temps can affect charge levels. Once it's known how much you lose per day, it's a matter of simple math. If charging to 80% and placed in shipping mode is sufficient, that's more ideal than 100%.

Best practice for long term storage is actually to maintain around 50% SOC; i.e. plugged in and with charge limit set to 50.

Update:

we flew out on the evening of June 30, and the R1s was showing 303 miles of range.
In the app this morning - July 12 - with the Shipping Mode On, it’s showing 296 miles of range.

if that’s accurate, and is a comprehensive representation of total battery drain, I was clearly worried for no reason.
