Has anyone seen a link to MotorTrend’s scoring? I’m curious to see who came in 2nd.
I believe it was the Ford Maverick. They were relieved to see a truck getting cheaper instead of more expensive. They loved so much about it that apparently the choice for the Rivian was made by a slim majority. One judge changing their mind would have thrown it to Maverick.

This. I don't think I'd ever buy the Maverick (heck I'm not even buying the R1T). But it's without question in my mind one of the best values in the automotive world to date. It's incredible what they're offering at that price.

Yeah the Maverick with its MPG ratings and just overall price point and value makes it a very compelling candidate, but that's all it has going for it. I wouldn't even consider it closed in my opinion. The R1T just does everything, and does everything so well.

Motor Trend says the thing handles and good as a Range Rover SVR with a simple push of a button.

The R1T takes all the considered factors that I had when getting a Tesla Model S and just blows the doors off. In 2014 I was looking at performance SUVs, the Model S is was faster at the time, had more cargo volume, handled better, it was such a great value proposition even at +100k.

The R1T takes that to a new level and does it all for the price of 70k. It's just mind-blowing.

IIRC the Hummer hit 0-60 in 3 seconds flat, while the R1T did it in 3.2. I don't know that I saw any MotorTrend quarter mile numbers.

For a point of reference, the Rivian 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times almost exactly mirror the 2018 Model 3 Performance I had.

Considering the hefty difference between the 2, that's pretty damn impressive.

The comments on the video are AMAZING!

Just goes to show a lot of Americans fear and despise change.
Dont make me think!
I know what I know and I am comfortable knowing those few things and anyone who challenges my perspective is an idiot.

I get that this post is not exactly "friendly" and in that it is hypocritical but what a brilliant display of people who cant think critically. This laggard mentality I think, is the investor's concern, will enough Americans take a moment to challenge their preconceived notions and buy a truck like the Rivian?

Its ability to charge at 190 kW now, the promised over-the-air upgrade to 300-kW charging, and Rivian's ongoing efforts to install chargers at trailheads, campsites, and parks mean range is no real concern.
MT doubling down on the idea 300kW will be available as an OTA upgrade

First post. Great to see the news, but even before this I was sold on what Rivian was making. I've driven SUV's for 20+ years and held out on an EV until there was a vehicle that was both capable and had a few hundred miles of range. I've watched a ton of reviews over the past few months and it's amazing what good engineering can accomplish.

As others have mentioned, the comments on the YouTube video are to be expected. If Americans didn't want a capable truck/suv EV, then Ford wouldn't have sold out the launch of the F150 Lightning. Wait until the rest of the auto industry shifts heavily to EV's. Reading the comments kinda reminds me of when I used to own a SeaRay and the people on the forums who would complain about the new boats like an old man shaking his fist at a cloud.

I ended up putting in a reservation on an R1T after almost buying a Wrangler Rubicon 4xe. I know all of the quirks and features (sorry) of owning a Jeep, but what put me off was when I saw Jeep reveal the 2022 4xe will have double the range just by Jeep improving the braking. Plus, finding a Wrangler right now is almost impossible. So I sold my Grand Cherokee and decided on the Rivian. The 4xe would have made sense for my use case since my daily commute is less than 10 miles RT. I instead look forward to the R1T, which will be all EV, capable and likely better quality.

I'm an R1S reservation holder. To me the most relevant comment in the YouTube comments is that the MotorTrend audience cannot buy an R1T today, tomorrow, or probably not until 2024 even if they reserve one today. And with a stated goal of a 50,000 annual production rate for both the R1T and R1S, it will be a vehicle with more demand than supply. The same is true for the Hummer pickup. All of the other competitors are available today but because of the supply chain issues some may not be delivered until 2022.

Otherwise for me, it is deserved to be MTTOTY. It is a new standard for others to compare to.

This is glorious news. I can't even keep up with all the opportunities for trolling Rivian haters. The Motortrend Facebook post alone is going to keep me busy all day. :giggle:

I honestly am not confident that they understand the difference between the vehicle capability and the RAN charger capability. No one should buy the Rivian based on the expectation it will be capable of 800v level DCFC speeds until Rivian unequivocally says that it will.

If it were, it would cut about 10 mins from a 50% charge (18 mins vs. 28) if it allowed you to average 100kw higher rate over that 50%. For my use, it would save me an hour or two a year, so while certainly welcomed it's not a critical factor in the purchase decision for me. You also need to find a charger capable of that speed and the conditions to be optimal to take advantage of it.

Why should the ability to take delivery quickly be a factor in awarding the best vehicle? By that logic, the least desirable vehicle should win because a dealer would pay you to tow it off their lot.
