I also have a roll of this cheap PPF but haven't installed it yet, and debating whether to do it...

I think it helped a lot, but also kept a sunshade up full time.

Removed because I'm moving to gen2.

Also took off the clear PPF on the hood (partial) because there was a section I couldn't heal... Looks brand new, no fade after 3 years. Definitely putting on my next R1t.

Regular PPF won't do it. The glue is not optically clear enough (I've tried). You need specialized film but most of what's on the market is pretty bad in my experience. Took me 2 years and over 10 different films until I found one that I think is not. I will give it a little more time to test against scratches but at least in terms of distortion it's good.

I appreciate the concern for sure. That's a fake (voicemail) number I use for businesses, I won't give them a real number or address, and I don't think VINs are anything to hide. If anyone can figure out my location, come by for a beer. My online identity is also widely known in some circles.

Hm sounds like a decent idea. I don't see an issue with it, I mean we can technically do it, just not for free as the material If found is expensive and shipping is also expensive. Then again the whole windshield film will be a rathe expensive product, likely in the $250 range, largely due to packing/shipping requirements (shipping alone of stuff of that size, even when it's rolled up, is often times $50 or more).
For now, I am waiting for Rivian SC to return my R1S so I can start working on that cut template because for testing only, I did bulk install with manual trimming. Then I also plan on testing ceramic coating it, and see what happens. Hopefully in a few weeks I can release.

My friendly neighborhood detailer/PPF installer charged me $500 to include Windscreen film in my package, so saving 50% for a DIY would probably speak to most people who are already interested.

Disclaimer: I AM NOT great at applying any kind of decals, logos, stickers, or screen protectors, so take the next part with a grain of salt:
- I assume it'd be somewhat easier to be a DIY installer on glass as it should be more forgiving, no? Probably something along the lines of: clean windscreen to perfection +fully saturate said windscreen and the back of the PPF in water & detergent soap solution + lay it all out and align the center + squeegee from the center outward to clear the solution. Leave in sun to bake for 2 days.

So, assuming it's...straightforward enough, I could justify saving 50% and probably swapping windscreen film on the yearly for the added piece of mind (I'm going on 3 years with my current film and it verily needs replaced just because of the embedded rock splatter and road rash from having done its job).

That's exactly what the install process is. One thing that I struggled with (and on my todo to figure it out before I release) is the wipers though. I couldn't figure out how to pop them up, so I had to work around them which was messy. If anybody knows how to pop these up, like the way you did it on old cars in the winter so they don't freeze, please do share so I can feel less stupid

There's a setting in the service menu for wiper maintenance. It moves them to ~40-45 degrees on the windscreen, then you can fold them outwards.

I have no idea what installers use sangbo locally to me. Not easy to find without phone tag. I can find UPPF installers, but unhappy their product only comes in 70%VLT. I'd love the roof to be darker, not just cooler.
