They don't put tow hooks on all models? I didn't know this.
Correct, the Dual Standard doesn't have them :(

Question - if a R1S gets totaled during off-roading, does insurance cover that? Asking for a friend...

I don't off-road besides sand. It's too expensive of a vehicle for off-roading.

Pack a lunch and a small cooler. Take a few easy trails and save anything moderate to hard for next time.
Find a nice shade tree to have lunch and enjoy the day and scenery. Don't over think it.

Have some ideas for the kids to watch for local birds or wildlife. OK to park and do some walking along a stream or other natural feature. Make it more about enjoying the outdoors than an off road competition/rally.

Too generic of a question. Dependent of your particular insurance policy. Usually not covered.

Quite a dilemma. If you don't need off-roading capability, you could get a much cheaper EV. But if it's cheaper, you'd be ok to off road. But then you need to spend more.

Too existential for me, I send it in the Riv.

I off-road in sand, just not rocks or anything that can scrap the sides too much.

I'm also 6' 5'', so I do prefer a vehicle a bit larger than a sedan.

AT tires for the 22 tend to have better square treads to protect them. Example below. The DM has much more capability than the body protection. I've gone up some serious rutted hills where I thought no way without a locking dif.

Based on everything that I've read it would appear that the tires would be more important than the fact that I have Dual Motor and not Tri or Quad. I am with the 22" Range and I am tempted to buy 20" All Terrain but it seems I will lose 15% range (which puts me from 270miles to 230miles which becomes a bit problematic for long trips) and gain a lot of road noise...so still undecided what to do. Might look into the size of my tires and see if there are just more off-roady tires for the rims I have.

The tires have a much bigger influence on range than the wheel size. There's a whole selection of tires that fit both wheels so you can go from mild to wild. Also depends on if you go with a 115/116 or a much heavier tire version.

If you're switching tires, you could go to the newer 20" rim Goodyears for Rivian, ATs with high emphasis on range. Not sure how much more durable they'll really be off road than the 22"s, but they must be better.

Hey guys

So, we went to SVRC today and unfortunately the trails were closed (even though I called to ask yesterday and was assured they are open 😂) but the 4x4 playground was open.
I was with the 22" Range wheels with about 1/3 thread left on them. Aired down to 36psi and the Rivian took on everything like a champ. On 2 occasions we lost traction on at least one wheel that I can identify and the Rivian recovered quickly and without any loss of control. I've always loved my R1S but after this I love it even more, I can't believe how it handled all that was thrown at it today.
Unfortunately I don't have photos from the more extreme part of the "playground" as everyone was in the car, I only had my kids and wife as spotters for a few of the easier obstacles in the beginning.

Here are some photos:

Highest is terrible for traction. Looks like you had fun though!

Nice! Always a fun time playing in dirt.

You can do what I did. Get some cheap Ram 1500 wheels (there's a long thread here) and used off road tires. I got a set of wheels, painted them gunmetal in my backyard, and picked up a 50% used set of KO2s all for just about $450-500.

Since 99% of my driving is on road, I'd rather have good road tires. For the 1% I want to play, I can mount them myself in my garage in ~1 hour and play in more aggressive areas without caring about damaging wheels.

Based on everything that I've read it would appear that the tires would be more important than the fact that I have Dual Motor and not Tri or Quad. I might go that way but I was thinking of trying hybrid first...the 22" Range Wheels with the OEM Pirelli Zero are not the best choice for off-roading but I see that Pirelli and Nokian have All Terrain tires for the 22" rims (275/50/22) so I am thinking of getting those and if I still don't like it (or get hit too much in range or noise) then get deducted wheels just for that.
