Space Saver Spare Tire Solution Fits in R1T!!

I've never understood why an $85K vehicle comes with no spare tire, and I knew I needed to have something for an emergency. My original plan was to use my Rivian store credits toward a spare, but I was told that "installing" a spare tire required a service appointment. I was also told that the space saver spare is only for the R1S. I was able to use some of my Rivian credits toward the spare tire service kit (jack, hold down bolt, styrofoam insert), so I got that a while back.

Even without the service kit, a full size spare was going to set me back ~ $1,400. However, the fine folks at the Richmond, VA service center let me know that they tried a space saver spare in the R1T, and they couldn't see any reason why it wouldn't work!

So, for a little over $400, I now have a spare tire (and enough extra room in that big tire compartment to stow my hitch when I'm not using it!).

You would need to 3D scan and convince someone to make a sealable insulated bin of the space. Spare kit contains steel parts that don’t keep well in moist environment. A donut shaped soft cooler + freezer packs probably best and easiest to make.

I think it's a 31" tire so a bit smaller than a full size one going down the road

Sounds like they did it for cost, but you can pick up a used stock 21" wheel and tire for cheaper. Who cares if it's a perfect match... it's a spare.

Or one of those Ram wheels. Either way, it's a better idea.

But you CAN buy the tire service kit with your points, then have them deduct that cost from the spare tire shop cost.

The cost was part of the decision, but mostly I knew from my previous slacker experience that I will never actually do a 5 tire rotation regimen, and quite honestly, I'm tired of lying to myself!!

I had one of these "origami" spares in my VW Touareg, and it worked great the one time I actually needed it. I just didn't want to be stuck with no spare if I lose a tire.

I looked for a used tire & wheel, but couldn't find anything cheaper. Didn't look long and hard, but for a bit over $400, this solution got me where I wanted.
