I guess we're all entitled to our opinions/POV. But since we don't control how Rivian prioritize or allocate resources... I mean... does it matter what we think? They decide what orders to place from their suppliers and when. If retrofitting PTC was a hotter priority, they would've added it to the Gear Shop by now... how many years later? I am not making excuses for Rivian for not thinking the PTC issue is important. I'm just saying their actions (or inaction) suggest they feel there are things that are more important.

Besides, if any part or all of the PTC is manufacturered overseas... Need I say more?
On the PTC being added to the gear shop ages ago were it a priority, I think the issue they had to overcome was the v1 and its V1 variants reliability issue. Which was why they removed them from the configurator at the time. It's only now, with the Dune Edition launch that V2.0 saw the light if day, add to that the backlog of existing V1 breakdowns... I just answered my own rant.

There's not enough V2's to fix the current V1 situation, so allocation to non warranty retrofits/new 2026 R1T's yet to be sold is likely the hold up on gearshop introduction.

And potentially trade barriers.

And didn't someone upgrade to v2 (with a new vehicle) and it still jammed within a week of delivery? I lost track. At some point, I found it easier to care less. I haven't died with the manual cover. A PTC would be nicer, but just more headache later. lol

I got a 2024 Gen 1 July delivery with $500 cover "to be installed later" - there was a blank space where the button would be. A version 1.5 (I believe) cover was installed near the end of 2024. Worked great until earlier this week when the last panel refused to stack inside the body. Opened a ticket and got a call where we tried the calibrate routine. That only seemed to make it worse and I had to do some fancy button pushing to get it to close against the tailgate again. Was told I was now "on the list for replacement, once we get the parts." No date was given and I was told that I would be contacted "eventually" to schedule the replacement.

My Gen 2 with 1.5 tonneau cover failed a couple of weeks ago. First slate got stuck sideways. I understand from service I will get a V2 cover installed. However, the parts are not available right now. I’m told but part availability is currently slated for mid-September.

When I got my 2023 R1T, it was manual tonneau cover, or no cover.

As an alternative, I went with the Lomax Tri-fold hard cover. It came in about a week after delivery and after two plus years, I've been using it constantly. Things I like about it:
  1. It will hold up to 400 lbs so snow isn't a concern. I wouldn't stand on it, but that's me.
  2. It is about 99% waterproof - I drove once from Eugene OR to Seattle in a torrential downpour and the truck sat outside in the same storm over night only to have a few drops in the bed.
  3. You can access the spare tire. I rotate my own tires and I can remove/replace the spare, I just put a towel on the lip so it won't scratch the wheel going in/out.
  4. It locks whenever it's closed and the only way to open is it to drop the tailgate. Just pull the little cord from either side and it opens.
  5. There are no cumbersome portions to stack and fall over when accessing the bed.
  6. loading boxes for travel is easy. We have several Instacrates and those black/yellow boxes that we use under the cover all the time. Put them in, stack them, then cinch them down with a rope to keep them from sliding around.
  7. It can be removed in about 10-15 minutes, but I've never had a need to do that
  8. It costs approximately 1/2 the price of the Rivian Manual cover
  9. It just works from a brand that's been building these for trucks for decades.
  10. Drawback: it won't open with crossbars on it. I don't have these so isn't a concern.
My recommendation: give up on the Rivian cover, avoid the time and hassle involved, get another solution, and go out and be adventurous.

I’m highly tempted to do that although I may give Rivian a last chance since the replacement cover I’m supposed to get is the narrow slat version. Less failure points on that version IMO. If I do end up deleting it though, I’m intrigued by the Interrobang cover. A bit more tedious to open/close but you retain the OEM look.

I saw a new Quad at the Olathe, KS service center that had the new and improved cover with the small slats.

I regret the money and time that I have wasted on Rivian's PTC. It has been delay after delay, and make do, and build my own interim manual solution, with little to no communication from or priority by the mfr. Just go with something else - something that is known to work. Save yourself the headache.

Just for clarity, did you get a retrofit PTC? If so, is it the wide or narrow slat version?

retrofitted a gen2 R1T with the v1 (large slat) PTC. Truck was delivered with no PTC and didn't even come with the buttons for the powered one. Delivery specialist said I had to pick an inventory car to hit a lease deal and PTC could be added later as that was part of my config. it was in the service center for about a day or two. Has mostly been working fine with one time it sort of locked up and I realized after they mistakenly installed a v1.

I'm on a waitlist for the v2 as thats technically what I paid for so the service center told me mid Sept they expect the new v2 (smaller slats ) to come in.
