The J1772 AC adapter that rivian provides with the 2026 models with NACS charge ports was left at the charging station I use.
Short story is that I traded up from Gen 1 to Gen 2. I'm senile at the age of 80 yrs old and I have been charging at level 2 chargers that have J1772 for the past three years. In this case, after I charged, I disconnected the J1772 plug and apparently left the adapter on the charger plug at the station (muscle memory). After a few days, when I went back to the same charger that I had used, I found out that the adapter, which I thought I left plugged into the Rivian NACS port, was missing from the port. Yes, it is my fault for not taking the adapter with me when I unplugged, muscle memory, after three years of ownership is to unplug the J1772 and move on. At the time, I didn't notice the adapter was still attached to the J1772 charging station cable.

This will probably happen more than once with me, same as losing my keys in ICE vehicles. I will now buy a few spares.
I will help myself from doing this again by tethering the adapter to the Rivian, similar as tethering the gas cap (lanyard) in ICE vehicles.
It's too bad RJ and crew didn't think of the possibility of us old farts forgetting to take the adapter with them.

I don’t think of the $10 bill I found on the road the other day as stolen. You’re old and you left something valuable sitting around with no way to get it back to the original owner.

I normally don't respond to trollers but must speak to this because I was taught by my parents, teachers and friends to leave a found item with a note or turn it into the facility lost and found. In your example, I would donate the $10 that I found.

There’s no room in the charge port for there to be a “tethered adapter”. You left it behind and then three days later, are shocked someone took it. I’m sorry it happened but I don’t think it is realistic to expect someone to return an adapter to you with zero identifying info. Maybe next time put some stickers on the adapter with your email on it and a Good Samaritan might do the right thing. This has zero responsibility for Rivian.

Apparently, the next person who used the charger decided that he needed the adapter more than me because I could not find it at the charging station when I returned to get my next charge.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Perhaps we can help track down your adapter. What public level 2 charger did you use? We, as a community, can help scan apps and social media in that area for any posts about an adapter left behind.

Just a suggestion, but what about putting up a Postit or note on the driver's side window when you go to charge to remind you to get the adapter? Something like "Don't forget your adapter". I guess you could also put the sign on the dash so you'd see it before you drove away. You could store the sign with the adapter which would remind you to post the sign before you plug in. Otherwise you could throw some sharp tacks on the drivers seat to remind you to get your adapter!

Sorry about your loss, maybe Riviot and this forum can help you find your adapter.

I’m sorry you lost your adapter, but it has nothing to do with the Rivian folks. Instead of blaming them, maybe try to use this forum to try and track it down?

What date are we talking about and which charging station? Maybe a fellow Rivian owner grabbed it for safe keeping and is monitoring the forum waiting for someone to ask about it?

It would be fairly easy to tether the adapter to the Rivian while charging. Attach a lanyard, with a small carabiner at the end of the lanyard, to the adapter using a zip tie, etc. After connecting the adapter to the charger and the charger to the vehicle, loop the lanyard around the charger door, securing the lanyard to itself with the carabiner. Remove when charging is complete. No modification to the Rivian.

If you can’t keep track of your things perhaps you’re too old to be driving. It’s not stolen if you leave it laying around. You made a mistake and someone else got a free adapter for it. Not a huge deal, but it’s 100% on you.

This does spark an idea to use a label maker to put my contact info on my adapters. This is probably a good idea.

I haven't left mine behind yet, but I could easily see it happening.

Most people want to be a good samaritan and return something like this, but they'll only go through the effort if there's a viable path to find the owner.

As someone with ADD my entire life is a basically a set of strategies to trick myself into not forgetting things.

My suggestion is to keep the adapter in a colorful bag when stored. When you need to use it you take it out of the bag and put the bag on the dashboard.

When you are done charging and get back in the car you will see the bag on the dashboard and remember what it’s for and that it shouldn’t be there.

Also: yeah. Put your email address and phone number on a label on the adapter. Make it easy for someone to return it to you and most people will.

Heck, maybe even attach an AirTag.

Sorry that happened, losing an adapter sucks. But honestly once you leave one at a public charger it’s like sunglasses at the beach — pretty much gone. Putting a label with your phone # or email on the new adapter might help with getting it returned in the future.

Not really something Rivian could fix since the adapters are meant to be portable. Best bet is your tether idea or just keep a spare in the glovebox so you’re not stuck. Hopefully they or an aftermarket company come up with an easy tether option down the line.
