J1772 AC to NACS adapter was left behind HEADS-UP

left the adapter on the charger plug at the station (muscle memory). After a few days, when I went back to the same charger that I had used, I found out that the adapter, which I thought I left plugged into the Rivian NACS port, was missing from the port.

I quoted the facts, the rest is speculation. Your thread title is misleading at best, you have no idea what happened to that adapter. Maybe the next person tossed it in the garbage. I can tell you if I happened upon it in this situation I would have tossed it thinking it was broken and left behind. No reason for a heads up, just a story that happened to you.

As someone with ADD my entire life is a basically a set of strategies to trick myself into not forgetting things.

My suggestion is to keep the adapter in a colorful bag when stored. When you need to use it you take it out of the bag and put the bag on the dashboard.

When you are done charging and get back in the car you will see the bag on the dashboard and remember what it’s for and that it shouldn’t be there.

Also: yeah. Put your email address and phone number on a label on the adapter. Make it easy for someone to return it to you and most people will.

Heck, maybe even attach an AirTag.

As a fellow ADDer, I second this suggestion as I myself keep my adapter in a bright, neon color that I hate, bag. It’s saved me at least twice now on road trips where I would’ve left the adapter after unplugging. (Also, Airtag use is key if you forget things like I do—you get pinged on your phone if you leave it behind—I do this for my wallet/key chain when I had a car that used keys).

True, but society hasn’t changed that much — stuff left unattended in public has always had a way of disappearing. The real difference these days is we get to bitch about our own mistakes on the internet and call it a societal collapse.

I disagree. He left behind his adapter, that's it. The sad state of our society is the speculation without facts that someone came behind and took it. It's not like he left a credit card at a restaurant with his name on it, it's a piece of plastic attached to a plug someone needed to use. Additionally like we all need a HEADS UP we have a thief that drives a Rivian or be reminded to not leave behind adapters.

The sad state of this forum is these open ended stories and comments with HYPE that are taking away from content about beautiful roadtrips gear Rivian announcement and other valuable content.. This thread, along with my favorite "I'm on my 4th windshield" add zero value to this forum

There’s no room in the charge port for there to be a “tethered adapter”. You left it behind and then three days later, are shocked someone took it. I’m sorry it happened but I don’t think it is realistic to expect someone to return an adapter to you with zero identifying info. Maybe next time put some stickers on the adapter with your email on it and a Good Samaritan might do the right thing. This has zero responsibility for Rivian.

There is a bright side to the story - I’m now going to put my name and phone number on my DC NACS adapter because I could see myself making this mistake.

Agreed, but I would add that part of “morality” is holding yourself accountable for your own mistakes and not blaming others.

If the charger was near a store I might take it inside and ask them to put it in the lost/ found. That isn’t stealing. That is trying to help ensure it isn’t stolen If there is no contact info on the adapter.

I should have done this with my Subaru gas cap i left at a station when we had to make multiple trips between TX/AZ.
ADHD, lack of sleep, and stress was the reason, but I was sure to egg my local subaru dealer afterwards...

I normally don't respond to trollers but must speak to this because I was taught by my parents, teachers and friends to leave a found item with a note or turn it into the facility lost and found. In your example, I would donate the $10 that I found.

If you were taught that lesson, then you should also have been taught to take responsibility for your actions. If something bad happens through no one’s fault but your own, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

So cleaning up litter is now stealing? Geeze.

As far as we know it remained at the station for 2 days and was run over 17 times before it was finally deposited into a trash can. It may not have been intentional but the OP littered. There was no reason for whoever found it to think that the OP planned to return and retrieve it. And actually by the OP's admission most likely at the time it was probably cleaned up they had no such intention because they were unaware that they had left it.

Am I a thief when I clean up a half empty soda can left in the parking lot? What if the person who left it there was planning to come back and finish their drink 3 days later? Even if it is the case that they were planning to come back and get it, cleaning it up is completely appropriate.

Whoever cleaned up the OP's mess a Good Samaritan, not a thief.

I agree that it is not appropriate to ridicule the OP for inadvertently leaving their adapter. But it is also not appropriate for the OP to call the good Samaritan who cleaned up the OP's mess a thief.

The sad commentary is on the part of the person discarding the concept of personal responsibility. Also it is not ridicule to point out that if you’re using your age as some sort of excuse to not take care of your things you might be too old to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Morality says not to take something that doesn’t belong to you, but that’s not what happened here. He left it, once you leave something unattended in a public place it becomes fair game. As another poster pointed out, what if a car unintentionally ran it over as it was carelessly strewn about the parking lot and a Good Samaritan put it in the trash can? In that case the OP caused litter due to his careless actions.

Stealing is what happens when someone takes property that you have claim over without your permission. If it were taken out of his car or even off the hood of his car that would be fair to call it stolen. If you don’t want your stuff to go missing you should act like it and take care of your things.
