I didn't mention supply shortage. What does that have to do with them pausing production to install R2 production line??There was no supply shortage.
Sorry I took your reply to @FutureTruck to be implying that the shut down of the factory would temporarily cut R1 production and hence deliveries for the quarter. Unfortunately demand is such right now that the production lines were running at reduced capacity/shifts prior to the shut-down.I didn't mention supply shortage. Supply is always going to be a problem, with fluctuating severity, for all brands. Especially with current administration's actions. RJ illustrated the problem plainly, multiple times. Take headlights for example: While the finished unit is from a US supplier, that supplier has their own list of suppliers for components. Those suppliers have their own list of suppliers. And some of these suppliers are found nowhere else but China... Because, over decades, in race to lower cost and maximize profits, some industries evolved to [effectively] concede control to that country. And this isn't being political. It is just a plain "this is how it is" description.Sorry I took your reply to @FutureTruck to be implying that the shut down of the factory would temporarily cut R1 production and hence deliveries for the quarter. Wrong. Top 2 selling vehicles in 2024 in the US were trucks. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g60385784/bestselling-cars-2024/This is not close to right.
Total Market Breakdown (2024 Gemini):
If you mean the best selling model is the F-150, then yes, sometimes though not last year, where the RAV4 still outsold them.
- SUVs and Crossovers: 9.17 million
- Pickups (All Sizes): 2.85 million
- Sedans/Passenger Cars: 3.23 million
- Vans/Minivans: 0.66 million
The full-sized pickup market in 2024 was 2.2 million out of 15.6 million or a 14% market share. Throw in the small and mid-sized market and it is 2.9 million or 18% market share.
Clearly. Anyone who expect the R1 line to be anything but a foundation or spring board (to build off of) has zero understanding of the auto industry or business in general.Seems as if Rivian is treading water until R2 release and betting their future on that vehicle. Most people can't afford $100k+ vehicles and those that want a Rivian probably already have one.
I trust Gemini AI about as much as I trust C&D AI, which is to say very little for either. That said your article is for the F-series as a whole, not the F-150. And lets not forget that within even the F-150 line, a very large portion of those are fleet sales for work vehicles. Within the consumer market I don't think there is any question that SUVs dominate, even over trucks.Wrong. Rav4 was #3.
Never trust Gemini.
Lots of the vehicles in the Car & Driver list look like SUVs and crossovers to me.Wrong. Top 2 selling vehicles in 2024 in the US were trucks. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g60385784/bestselling-cars-2024/

What really surprised me was seeing that more Cybertrucks sold than R1S's: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g64540955/bestselling-evs-2025/ - this seems off? (and Yes I know I'm changing the scope between SUV and Truck here. For an R1T base price of $71k....there's a lot of good vehicle for that transaction amount. I get it, many don't know the brand and are not willing to risk it outside of a known OEM but man, compared to it's competition in the EV pickup segment I was a bit surprised how low the sales actually are of the T. With the last push of the tax credit and leasing options, I would of thought higher numbers.
Regardless, Rivian has built an incredible product and brand. I'm a bit nervous that everything is riding on the success of R2, but am still incredibly confident in the company. Go Rivian!
Oh for sure. But to say the best selling vehicle is not a truck is just not accurate.Lots of the vehicles in the Car & Driver list look like SUVs and crossovers to me.
Best wishes!
Why is this surprising?
