Normal shutdown started in mid-September to begin installation of R2 production line.
Doesn’t add up. The lack of sales was not due to lower production. Rivian consistently produces more R1s than it sells and has plenty of inventory. The plant shutdown has nothing to do with the lower sales.

… I did see a Tesla Energy Cybertruck today, so I know some of those sales are going to Musks other companies….
This Is true, it is being reported that SpaceX and xAI are purchasing them, also reporting that Tesla is planning on refreshing their aging mobile service fleet with the CT.

EV truck sales, regardless of model, are in the toilet. Not just Rivian issue.

F-150 (non-Lightning) sold about 200K vehicles in Q3. More than all EV trucks combined x 6...
It's the most expensive vehicle chassis to electrify.

I'm in SE Michigan and there are Lightnings and Denali EVs everywhere though.

Ok, this is about EV pickups. The average Lighting transaction is certainly lower than an R1T but it's still up there....it dominated this segment. I know brand loyalty goes a long ways here.

R1T is among the oldest and priciest and smallest.

Ford is a household name. Rivian isn't. Lots of people are too scared to try new things. That's also not new. Plus, there are lots of shit-talkers online (as witnessed in this thread and many others on this site) who distort and amplify those existing insecurities in potential new buyers. Speaking of insecurities and Ford being a household name... There are Ford dealers just about everywhere and along busy freeways and boulevards. Everyone can see them. Rivian's service operation and availability is far less visible to potential buyers; especially those who don't take time to research and lack critical thinking.

Yes the truck market may be the last to crack open. I believe most truck lovers also love gasoline/diesel and don't want to deal with electric.

I don’t think the R1T matters anymore. It was a gateway product that was something new and unique to launch the brand. The R1S sells very well and the R2 will sell very very well.

Most pickup buyers are hyper brand loyal and don’t want a Rivian, and Rivian customers largely want SUVs.

Ford dealerships were putting out crazy discounts on the Lightnings this last quarter. Had a friend want to buy a Rivian but got such a good deal on a Lightning that it was a no-brainer. I think Ford is losing quite a bit on Lightnings right now as well when the R&D costs are included the way it is for Rivian.

I dunno man. You put out a lot of misleading information, including in this thread. Thou does protest too much.

The best selling vehicles in the US are trucks. Every single year.
This is not close to right.

Total Market Breakdown (2024 Gemini):
  • SUVs and Crossovers: 9.17 million
  • Pickups (All Sizes): 2.85 million
  • Sedans/Passenger Cars: 3.23 million
  • Vans/Minivans: 0.66 million
If you mean the best selling model is the F-150, then yes, sometimes though not last year, where the RAV4 still outsold them.

The full-sized pickup market in 2024 was 2.2 million out of 15.6 million or a 14% market share. Throw in the small and mid-sized market and it is 2.9 million or 18% market share.

Iirc, R1S outsells R1T 5-to-1. Maybe more, now? SUV's and crossovers are definitely more popular than pickups.

That said, I still think the T is the most well-rounded of the options listed. Need to get more butts in seats for demo drives. And get that price down to where midsize truck buyers are at.
