Why can't they retrofit existing R1's with NACS?

I wasn't thinking weight was an issue. But I definitely know people (and spouses) who see it as a hassle needing to pull out an adapter every time they need to charge. I've actually helped change out the L2 charger cable at a friend's home charger because it was "enough of a hassle for them to want to do something about it," which is probably the real standard for this kind of swap.

100% psychological and a made up problem vs an actual impediment. These people should probably stop wearing shoes too and just pay to lay carpet wherever they go. Life is just too hard to have to insert one thing into another and then pull back out everyday.

To convert, it requires extra contactors in the vehicle to meet safety isolation requirements. Those are inside of the battery housing, so the battery has to be opened up, and may or may not have room for extra contactors. $$$$$$

The AC/DC switch is in the battery pack. You'd need a new pack. I don't think anyone wants to pay for that, all the wiring, port, and most importantly labor.

If you're in a household with a nacs car and a j1772 car, it'd probably be more practical to get the universal Tesla wall charger that has the adapter built in kind of like a magic dock

Why? How? A TeslaTap Mini doesn't even weigh 1 pound. If you only have one vehicle you just leave the adapter on the charging cord. Even if you have two vehicles and one is a Tesla, plugging and unplugging the adapter is as simple as... plugging and unplugging? A physical task you perform at the charging port anyway? If you are able-bodied, why is this being perceived as difficult?
I've had J1772+Tesla vehicles at the same time for many years. I've had dual J1772 EVSEs. And the positions the vehicles park changes, so "one J1772 + one Tesla" wouldn't work either. I've had zero problems using the Tesla J1772 adapter.

Ironically, the new R1S w NACS couldn’t charge using NACS level 2, had to hook up the OG Rivian charging with a NACS adapter…don’t ask me how or why…so maybe be careful what you wish for?

I agree, I have a Model S and an R1S. My charger is a J1772 and I simply use the J1772 to J3400 adapter to charge the Model S, will use that on the R2 as well once it is delivered.

That is a very minimal adapter and I’ve never had an issue with it.

Don't want it, wouldn't pay for it. I'm accepting that EV's will use adapters for the long haul and in my area, CCS chargers are more abundant, available and cheaper than Tesla infrastructure. I also have a Y and use an J1772->NACS adapter at home for L2.
Honestly, this is kinda a sweet spot to be in right now. CCS has pretty much proliferated everywhere a charger is going to be, so we benefit by default, not having to worry about connector types. And then for the most reliable/expansive charging network, we have an adapter that can be used with roughly 75% of that infrastructure to backfill, or better yet, give us alternatives.

Don't get me wrong, NACS is better because it's sexier, but worrying about charging on trips has been a non-issue for the better part of 4 years for me more.

Very happy with my CCS equipped 25 R1T, did not want the NACS port. Using an adapater take 30 seconds, I leave it in the frunk in the netting pocket. Easy access when I need it. None issue for me.

I would prefer not having adapters, but it is what it is. That said, I would pay ~$500 or so if Rivian offered a retrofit. NACS is a smaller, more convenient form factor.
