I was trying to get an additional key card as one of mine got cracked (still works for now). The process requires making a service appointment (srsly?) and costs over $80. I mean WTH, Rivian? Tesla charges $40 for two key cards and a wallet, sent in the mail with DIY "programming." Rivian charges $80 and requires technician to "program." (I would think Rivian would have better things to do with scarce technician time than setting up key cards!) In any case, I am going live with the original. Nothing a little duct tape can't handle!

Maybe take it in for service like me and keep getting more. I’m +2 cards, and +1 fob.

If they have to send someone out, I can understand why they charge $ 80. Even with that high charge, they are probably losing money on it. Rivian really needs to figure out how to do this remotely. There's no reason for it to require a technician.

It doesn’t require a tech for gen2, but does for gen1.

They have remotely activated a gen2 card for me before.

I have purchased used Gen1 cards, called service and they added it over the phone to my account...granted, this was probably 2023 but it is still possible.

This is not what I was told, but then I was also originally told that gen2 required a service appointment 🤣

Seems like it depends on who you speak to - Im starting to suspect that the folks in the central call center can’t do it, so they just make a SC appointment as It’s the only button they have?

Probably. And not the first time for these customer service generalists to pass false info.

The price is ridiculous. I don't see any reason why they can't let you program them yourself like tesla does. And it's literally a piece of plastic with an nfc card -- like you get at a hotel and throw in the trash when you're done with it. It shouldn't cost anywhere near $80.

Instead of shouting in the wind... why don't you all ask them directly on a platform that has the most public visibility? like X or Threads.

My guess is: A) Lack of economy with smaller scale. And B) very cautious and conservative management of legal liability, a tone set by their official legal counsel. This conservative position is evident in almost everything the brand does.

There are MAJOR differences between these Rivian MIFARE DESfire cards and ones used for hotel chains, which are often simple (unencrypted) NFC or RFID cards like the MIFARE classic.

I purchased 2 additional key cards for my gen 1 R1T last year. Walked into the local service center and bought them as a part. $60 a piece.
No technician programming required since I have a key fob already.

Technically the key card is similar to the room cards you get at hotels, based on NFC. If you lose one the front desk just reprogram one for you at no cost. Charging it for $80 is not an honest practice and will not make your business profitable.

FWIW- I purchased one of the bracelets on Ebay back when there was occasionally someone from Normal selling Rivian stuff there . My Rivian was a Gen I (Jan 2023 build) and after a little arm-twisting Rivian paired it to my vehicle 100% remotely/no Service Center visits required, and they did it for free. The bracelet has the exact same RFID chip as the key cards. It took about an hour after my initial phone call to CS to pair with my R1T.

When I had my Model Y (2021), IIRC a spare pair of Tesla key cards was only $25 delivered via Fedex in a nice little "wallet". I recall thinking at that time it was a good deal.
