R1S OEM Crossbar and RTT + Awning - questions

Looking for some advice. I’m taking delivery of an r1s in 10 days. I’m trying to plan for installing a RTT and ideally an awning on oem cross bars. If you have any info to my questions below would be super helpful as I’m trying to plan now. Thx!

1). If using oem crossbars, what’s the width of the bar T slot across the roof at each of the 3 mounting points? It looks like the first two mounting spots are the same distance left to right but the rear mounts are a bit closer to one another.

2) I ask about the distance because the RTT I’m looking at, intrepid geo 2.5, is 55” wide. I’m not sure if there will be room to also attach some kind of awning (ideally a 270 degree style for my needs) to the remaining T slot between the rtt and mounting post.

3) if there isn’t enough room when the rtt is centered has anyone shifted their rtt a bit to one side to make more room? That doesn’t seem like a good idea but I’m not sure.

4) the rtt is 83” long. I would think it’s best to mount the two bars at the front and rear mounting points but then the rear bar is a little lower than the front which means the rtt is angled a bit up in the front which isn’t ideal for wind. Is that actually ok or would you use the front two mounting points instead?

5) the rtt shell has t slots around the frame. It seems safer to mount the awning to the crossbars but curious if anyone mounts their awning to the rtt base and how that’s worked out. If so any weight considerations?

I’m here for the same info. I ended up buying the rooftop tent from Rivian. Trying to figure out the best awning to fit on the crossbars as well. Please let me know if you’ve gotten anymore info.

I have a R1T so my situation is different, but mounting an awning to the T slots of the RTT is pretty common. Just make sure it’s secured properly. Looks like they sell the T slot nuts and bolts if you search manually for it. Awning manufacturers will sell brackets as well, otherwise you can find a third party. 3 mounting points is best if you have the room for it. I ended up having to make my own brackets but for the R1S should be straight forward

I got to fit a inspired overland RTT with a 180 degree awning on 3 oem cross bars on our R1s.

Where did you mount the awning on the crossbars? Were you able to fit the mounts on top or have to find a side mount for awning? Can you post pictures?

RTT mounted with provided clamps over the rivian crossbars. The awning mount bolted directly on the crossbars. I look for pictures.

The awning is 84x10x8 inches at 64 lbs.
Front to back, the 1st-2nd crossbars are 36 inches and 2nd-3rd are 27 inches apart.
I am going to place another crossbar in the middle to make the mount sturdier, and so that I can place my RhinoRack cargo box on top of 2nd/3rd crossbars.

Not much more wind noise with the awning than just the crossbars (tested up to 70mph).

nice set up . I just finished my build with Nomadic 180 LTE cab mounted using Rivian crossbars. Did you face any issues with awning sliding out of rivian crossbar tslots? It has not happened to me but worried since the Tslot is open ended .

I thought of that but no sliding yet.
I repurposed my old RhinoRack cross bar and will put it in between the Rivian cross bars with another mounting bracket onto the awning. This cross bar is closed at the end with lock.

Looks awesome! I was curious how much space there is between the rear hatch and the awning when deployed. I have been debating a 180 or a 270 but was concerned the hatch would make contact on the 270 so was leaning 180.

As mounted (see pictures).

That is at standard height suspension which clears the top of my head (5’8”).

You can also mount the awning a little forward so that there is more room for the rear hatch door to open up before it hits the angled rear arms of the awning, or raise the suspension to highest, or mount the awning higher (on the mounting brackets) to maximize overhead clearance.
