Seeing embargoed R2 spec sheets that were given to press prior to today, they did show 265miles for base R2. Rivian definitely saw feedback online yesterday and changed base to 275+.

Just a guess...but the base model could just be a software locked battery pack. Allowing them to change capacity easily.

Im surprised by only having essentially 2 wheel options, no blacked out rims and no sign of the rims used in all the promos for the initial R2 (I know concept, but still interesting).

The LE seems like a really good value with the included bonus of Autonomy+ included. Likely done to pump up the initial volumes as they build up manufacturing capacity for the other models and prepare the tri motor. Im guessing the Tri Motor wont be available until the Gen 3 is ready. Also curious if the 45K model, doesnt go full Gen3 to keep costs down. Thats still my biggest question, how does Gen3 affect what is announced today. If its minimal, Rivian seems well positioned.

Excited for all you future R2'ers!!
I appreciate Autonomy+ included in our R1S Gen2 LE. Can see it as a primer to get new buyers and upgraders through the door with less friction. Plus, having a solid process for trade-in worked out online, buyers know what they are $trading-in$

With the "Launch Edition bonuses" including Autonomy+, I hope ALL R2s sold before LiDAR is added have "vehicle lifetime Autonomy+" as a bit of a perk for buying before LiDAR, since their Autonomy+ won't be as capable as later vehicles'.
I really don't know what Rivian is planning, and I would have to read the fine print in the offer, but I can imagine that they can promise to update the autonomy+ software for free for the life of the vehicle, but if the vehicle lacks the Lidar hardware, the parts of the software stack that deal with the Lidar would be irrelevant, and the capabilities that Lidar enables would still be lacking regardless. Like, your laptop may run the latest OS, which might include subroutines for burning optical disks, but if your laptop doesn't have a disk drive, it still won't be able to read or write disks, even with the OS update.

Wondering if it is just Autonomy+ or also adds Rivian charging network free period and/or Connectivity+ ?

wouldn’t that be nice if it came with lifetime RAN access? lol. Like the first Model S.

it’s not like they are all over the place to really take advantage of it (or abuse it…however they want to look at it)

(2) Autonomy+ features may vary based on vehicle model and hardware. Autonomy+ product features remain available during the lifetime of feature support for the hardware on the vehicle at delivery.

Launch will have tow package included. The performance (which launch edition is) won’t, but it’s an option you can add:

Doesn't look like Lifetime Connect+ is included for Launch Editions like it was on the Gen 2 Quad. That's too bad but I guess they have to keep differentiating what I think will be the new RAD Performance Trims.

I hope most of you want to wait for the LiDAR version and pass on the LE. I couldn’t care less about UHF, ADAS, FSD, etc., and I want the LE R2 as soon as possible!
same with us. I enjoy driving cars. I have a 3 mile commute WHEN I go to the office. So autonomous driving is really pointless to me. On the rare road trips we do, standard lane maintain and traffic aware cruise control is more than sufficient for long highway stretches.

Agreed. Living in Michigan and travelling to Normal, IL I'm highly spoiled there are three RAN networks nicely placed along that travel corridor. Also, having a '26 R1S with 6 months of RAN access, I'm at about $1,400 in avoided charging costs (13k miles in 5 months). So much so, that I've come to plan trips that include RAN along the travel paths. RAN is a very nice perk and looking at the national map of RAN locations, Michigan is a very RAN-friendly state for the size. There is even a RAN L2 at the very tip of the Keweenaw a mile or two from Copper Harbor, MI. Heck, they don't have cell coverage there but they do have a RAN!

Yes, especially since the power is the same with the single rear motor. If the battery were smaller (less cells, less voltage) wouldn't the motor output drop?

Adaptive cruise control has always been more than enough for me on road trips.

I think it’s great that Rivian and other manufacturers are working on this autonomous technology, and I can see the value in it for others, it’s just not something I’m interested in.

More fodder on towing capacity... Google summary of how it's determined:
"Towing capacity is determined by a vehicle's maximum allowable weight limit, specifically the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCWR) minus its curb weight, as set by the manufacturer based on engine power, braking performance, transmission strength, and chassis rigidity. Key factors include powertrain, suspension, and hitch type"

The cars we know are similar in size to the R2, and their max possible towing capacity (less with lesser powertrains):
2026 Honda CR-V: 1500 lbs
2026 Toyota RAV4 AWD: 3500 lbs
2026 BMW X3 M50: 4850 lbs

R2 Premium & Perf./LE and their 4400-lbs capacity compares well. Plus, how often do owners in this class of cars actually tow?
