Wondering what the best guess is on GVWR for the R2. There was an older thread on Reddit where someone thought 5,800lbs.

I know the Mach E GVWR max is 5,980lbs . Bummer for me as biz owner as S179 is 6,000lbs+. Always wondered why manufacturers who are that close just don't add something that is 20 lbs to make it more appealing for this scenario.

Asking as the R1S obviously is over 6K. Effectively this would make the R1S about the same net price as an R2 if the R2 is sub-6K lbs. We did this exercise a few years over when we liked Tesla (do not any longer). The Y is under, the X is over - but we hated the falcon doors so effectively paid more for a Y.

Not sure I would do the same thing in this scenario, even though I don't need 3 rows and all the room of a R1S.

Thanks!

Haha - I get it and nobody knows. Just checking on guesses. My own guess is less than 6K - that might drive me to get an R1S in 2025......

I'd get the R1S unless you need the performance of the tri-motor R2 and don't want to buy the R1 tri or quad. With the adaptable suspension, it drives much smaller than its size. Perhaps parking is an issue for you, but I parallel park mine with no problems. I would guess less than 6K for the weight as well.

Reviving this thread now that R2 was announced. As a business owner, really hoping
Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) for R2 will land over 6000 lbs. When do we find out?

Why do you care what the GVWR is?
Because they want to use the tax loophole even though they probably don't use their vehicle for business beyond commuting.

Well, you're in Washington too .... RTA tax doesn't apply to my R1T because it's a truck and over 6,000 GVWR. That saves me more than $1000/year on tabs ...

If you're using the vehicle for commercial purposes then the R2 will probably also qualify for a commercial exemption if it is over 6,000 lbs. That will save you a lot on the RTA tax every year. Additionally there's also Sec. 179, where you can expense the vehicle instead of depreciating it under certain circumstances. Yes, some people abuse that (I see many SUVs waiting to pickup at the nearby elementary school with commercial plates and several car seats in back) but it's also an important deduction for small business owners who really need the vehicle for their business.

They announced that the R2 is 2K lbs less. So I would take the R1S and subtract @k lbs.

If that's the case it will be close. R1S is 8,532 lbs, so that would make an R2 - 6,532 lbs, less whatever they might calculate for the weight of two passengers (5 vs 7) and less allowable cargo.

Not fully clear with GVW is In detail, but the weights that were released yesterday showed curb weight 4850 Lb?

That's pretty similar to our MachE GT that ended up with a GVWR of 5,980 lbs (20 lbs short..) with a curb weight of 4,993 lbs. So it could go either way.... GVWR and how it is calculated is a bit of a mystery to me.

Being generous and taking the heaviest R1S number from the support article, 6768 lbs. Take "nearly 2000 lbs" off that number, lets call it 4800 lbs. R2 payload is listed as 1168 lbs, so that'd mean a GVWR of 5968. So there's a real chance they might have intentionally went under 6k, or intentionally slightly over 6k if the vehicle weight is 50 lbs heavier like C/D estimated.

Interesting.... I wonder if it's more paperwork or something for a manufacturer to have their vehicles at 6000 lbs+. I mean, seems like it opens up more prospects for your vehicles if you hit that 6K GVWR.
