Rivian R1T R1S 2027 BMW i3 EV revealed with 440 miles range 1773848233794-b1

^ why is my first thought always "this ought to shut up those trolls who say EV battery materials aren't being recycled / they all just wind up in landfills". #sigh It's so exhausting...

This new release should be amazing and will give people plenty to think about when it comes to the competition.

As an I4 owner for 3 years I can't wait to see when the new one is released, might be an upgrade worth getting.

I've owned three X5s and don't think the interior room ever matches the dimensions because the top half of the vehicle is set in a little on each. Plus the inevitable sloping roof reducing cargo space.

To each his own, but I think we've owned our last BMW. Not to mention the horrible run flat tires & no brake warranty😳🙄.

Tesla dropped the ball on this 10 years ago; in 2016 Musk said that they would stop at 100kwh, and they have (save CT, which is still the smallest pickup battery out there). That decision, along with the tired old "300mi is enough for anybody" talking point, has really hurt the EV industry, IMHO.

How is this a Rivian competitor? iX3 I get, the i3 not so much.
We may replace our Dune with this! (The Dune replaced the Model S.) For some people like my wife, the Rivian is primarily a high-performance tech forward vehicle. Its SUV form factor is incidental.

Cons:
  • Estimated $50k starting price for i3 and $60k iX3 M50
  • Fastest charging rate requires dispensers that can deliver it, which is uncommon in the US. Potential buyers are not paying attention to this detail. Once they buy, they will find out DCFC is not as fast as “promised” unless they use certain networks/sites. Supercharger V3, perhaps most common in the US, can only deliver 250 kW max.
  • It’s a BMW, so a few options will hike prices well above starting
  • It’s a BMW, and like any other legacy OEM, inventory at starting price will be rare.
  • It’s a BMW, you deal with dealers

Impressive stats on paper. But don’t forget reality.

Your optimism is endearing
?? The reviews on the iX3 are on YouTube and accessible. Since the i3 is the same platform, batteries, motors and software then the expectation is that it is also top tier. An initial review is already out from a winter testing trip a few weeks ago.

I am not in the market for this vehicle and the looks are not ideal but hardly optimistic to see that this is a good vehicle.

iX3 looks awesomenand great tech, but I'm not sure I see it yet as a direct competitor to R2. iX3 pricing begins where R2 ends. Sure, there will be some overlapping cross-shoppers, but I feel it will be a small fraction of buyers.

Exactly. At least not until the R2 Tri/RAD is out. The $60k starting price is also without destination and whatever fee that get tacked on. Unless special ordered, examples of base trim are almost never ordered by dealers because of slimmer margins.

Where are the Pros? Or because its BMW, you don't think any???

- $50K is not outrageous for any BMW
- Fastest charging speed depends on DCFC's ability to deliver for all EVs
- All options increases pricing so what is the point??
- Probably very few base models but most BMW buyer are not looking for the base model - even Toyotas base models are hard to find...
- All makes aside from single handful (Rivian, Tesla, Lucid. Polstar) are direct sales so these are the exceptions and not the norm.

Not really. Trim vs trim level, pricing is more along the lines of this:

iX3 40sdrive ~ $50k
iX3 40xdrive ~ $55k
iX3 50xdrive ~ $60k

BMW will carry about a +/- $5k premium over R2. I would bet the BMW leases are the same or better than the R2. BMW always has competitive leasing.
