Nice work. So there is exactly one 21" tire option available today for the R2. And it's Pirelli. No thanks., I won't make that mistake again.
Exactly my feeling

We are going to go with the 20’s more tire options to pick from.

why not just use up the stockies and then swap?
Range. Giving up ~10% range is too much for me. We sold the ATs on our R1S the first week and bought LTXs instead on basically an even swap. Even with that we are pretty frustrated with the range and efficiency on the vehicle. (Love everything else about it but the range blows and the efficiency is not good. For the record we get 300 miles on the Michelins on a max pack on the daily work commute.)

This is a pretty close match in size to the OEM 255/55R21. I’d probably get a set of these as replacements. I’m very happy with the 22s I put on my R1S.

I like the looks of the 20s better but of equal importance getting the 20s also looks to avoid Pirelli. I have never had a set of Pirellis even vaguely live up to their expected lifespan per the treadware rating.

Additional plus for the 20 “AT” on the R2 is that tire doesn’t look like much of an all terrain at all. It shouldn’t be a deafening as the R1 AT tires.

But if the "optional" 20s have a cost (e.g. $1500) to make the change, I might reconsider. I hope there will be no cost since some might consider it a "downgrade" to go with the 20s.
$1.5k+ for smaller wheels wouldn't surprise me, given refrigerator white paint is $2k on R1.

There's going to be hundreds of thousands of R2's on the road sooner than later, I'm certain tire manufactures will give us more options for the 21".

I'm too new here to understand the Pirelli hate, but I'll share that I have WeatherActive 3PMSF on all three of our vehicles. Hope they become available for R2's 255/60/R20 -

Meanwhile, BFG markets Trail-Terrain T/A as 3PMSF, but Tire Rack doesn't agree for R2's 20" size (BFG site doesn't list that size yet). Perhaps pre-production sloppiness? If actually 3PMSF then that's a replacement option - don't really need AT but 'on-road AT' should be less extreme vs. BFG All-Terrain T/A KO3 'off road AT' by comparison -

Otherwise, I'd probably skip AT altogether, perhaps Michelin AS and keep the R2 in the garage during any severe winter conditions which can happen sporadically in No.VA -

Most likely the 20" rims will be a $2,500-$3k upgrade. If I remember correctly, they will be forged, so a huge improvement over the 21" in durability. I do really like the 21's but considering the 20's are $700 cheaper than the 21' It's a no brainer.

I fell into the same trap on the R1t and went with 21's then after 10k miles switched to a set of 20's. I do about 20k miles a year.

On my R1S quad I have the 22's but the ride is so trash in comparison too big of a rim and very sketch. The 21 is the right size for feel and performance but at a steep price.

Looks like R1 20" AT wheels are bundled w/ AT pack for $3,700. Will be curious to see R2 packaging -

I can understand going with 20s for tried and durability but for cost $700 every tens of thousands of miles is less than a potential upcharge of $2500.

Less than a 3yr ROI then in the positive. If i plan to keep my car 5 year then the savings are huge. Also keep in mind this is just for use replacement. This does not include any tire damage. Once you factor that it its almost a no brainer.

Three sets of tires - which should be ten plus years of driving. Unless I am missing something.

I concur, it's a fantastic tire! Hope they make a 21" too at some point.
