I've been reading through this thread for a while so when GOAT had their 20%bf sale I jumped on snagging them. Had a quick chat with Adam on the phone and he'd mentioned that some people took the plastic off and just didn't even bother putting it back on.

Wondering if anyone on this thread did this? I'm thinking bout doing the same but just wondering if there might be long term tradeoffs in doing so? I'm leasing my Gen1 R1T Dual Large pack but chances are very very good I'm just gonna buy out at the end ?

No trade off. It’s just cosmetic and individual preference.

The plastic definitely doesn't serve much purpose. I had a ton of dirt come down with mine when I removed them, clearly aren't stopping anything from getting beyond there. Doesn't seem to be much, if any, additional wear on the underside of the frame since removing them.

For those with rock sliders installed where the factory jack points are not accessible, how are you lifting your vehicle? I know many carry a bottle jack and the pucks for the factory jack points—what do you use in conjunction with the bottle jack here to lift the vehicle?

Bottle jack lifting directly on a flat part of the rock sliders right below the frame rails. Or with a little rubber pad on top.

I've got GOAT sliders which have access to the OEM lifting areas, but I still just lift the whole side of the vehicle off the ground from the sliders when rotating. I don't generally even put a jack stand under them for that, but you should.

I also take the rolling jack with us when traveling. I greatly prefer them to bottle jacks for roadside.

Same one Rivian uses, the 3 ton Eagle big wheel "Kratos". The Badland version that Harbor Freight sells is probably just as good. I do have the jack lock that I'll use if I have to get anywhere near being under the truck.

Cat has a 3-ton big-wheel jack as well (can be found on Amazon). All three are similar enough that they very well could have originated from the same overseas factory. If you look at all three, it's easy to see why the Harbor Freight Badland is least expensive, as it has least cosmetic flare.

There are trade-offs between these and good bottle jacks. Rolling floor jacks are inherently more stable, provide enough lift height, and take fewer pumps to lift. But, they are larger, much heavier and cumbersome. Bottle jacks need additional accessories for better stability (on soft ground) as well as lift height. But, they are more portable and less expensive. I have both and full size spare. If I were to do it all over again, I would probably skip the rolling jack, or leave it at home. But keep the bottle jack, jack pad and saddle extension in the truck (replacing the factory emergency scissor jack). For bottle jacks, safejacks.com has lots of good info, kits and add-on accessories. But more expensive than what you'd find at the big box stores.

If the sliders are designed/made right, you can lift entire side from them... and have wisely placed the jack where the slider is most strong/reinforced. AFAIK, most of the popular sliders have accessible jack points. They either leave access to the factory originals, or replicate it in their [slider's] armor plates.

Trouble with Service Center happens when:
  • There isn't enough clearance to fit their lift adapters to the original points on the R1
  • Or, their scope of work involve access to the HV pack's mounting points and the aftermarket sliders are mounted to some of those. At least two popular sliders do.
  • Or, they're unwilling to fit their lifts to the aftermarket lift points, for fear of damage to the aftermarket sliders and customer's vehicle.
From Rivian's POV, aftermarket products are of unknown quality/quantity. And to be absolutely free of blame, it's safest for them to not touch anything aftermarket. Even if they charge you for removal, they are taking on a degree of risk they'd rather avoid (so they're sure to communicate that anything non-factory is the customer's responsibility).
