Yeah, I've been in blizzards that froze a conventional rear wiper because its "parking" spot was too low below the rear window heater wires. As long as you start it when it isn't frozen to the windshield, it'll be fine. Yes, this design may not be the greatest for "sleet and freezing rain buildup when parked", but we'll have to see how good the heating system for it is before passing judgment.

Serious question: why do you/we need a rear wiper? There isn't a rear wiper on sedans. The heating elements defrost the glass for you.

I won’t be driving in blizzards but would like to see how the debris from falling leaves, acorns or small nuts and other wind blown crap gets in the pocket.
The area around my hood, roof lines and other truck bed seams around the R1T has collected a small geological sample from many places I’ve been

Drive faster than everyone else, then you don’t need to see what’s behind you.

Ha, ask that question to the first gen Ioniq 5 owners. Vertical rear glass gets messy when driving in inclement weather, mine gets so bad here in MI during winters it would be a hazard if I didn't have my rear wiper/washer...you simply can't see out of it.

I agree that design is going to be a problem, not just with snow and ice but with all the tree debris also. For people that live near pine trees it's just going to have to be a constant battle to keep it clean. I keep a mini blower in the T just for clearing out the tonneau cover before opening it, the gap around the glass roof is almost impossible to keep clean.

Ioniq 5 rear window is nowhere near vertical. But yes, our '22 no-wiper model year car does get filthy.

Someone pulled the rear wiper off of my 3rd Gen 4Runner and while the rear defroster helped a little, it never really cleaned off the snow, dirt, grime, etc. (the rear glass is pretty vertical). Hyundai sold the Ioniq 5 without a wiper for a few years and finally added it in 2025 because they had so many complaints. My EVO 8 (sedan) had a rear wiper and it worked quite well. Also, sedans are a bit more aerodynamic which pushes the snow off the rear glass.

Pre-25 I5 (no-rear-wiper model years) rear window is nowhere near vertical. But yes, ours does get filthy.
I should of explained in more detail, I don't drive an Ioniq 5 but owners had issues with no rear wiper...so much so that Hyundai added one with the light refresh. My rear window is not vertical either but making a general comparison to sloped rear glass like a hatch back or coupe type vehicle which often don't come with a rear wiper because the flow of air usually keeps things off of it.
