I've wondered if you pick it up in Normal, Illinois, would they waive the destination charge?

Honestly, why do people still ask this question? Haven't they ever purchased a car before? This is part of the same law that established the Monroney sticker, in 1958.

I remember when home delivery was the only option for Rivian here in Oregon. It was one of the coolest things to see my truck arrive like that. $1,500 seems a wee bit steep though.

The Count still remembers when a man named Sunday delivered the royal R1S to God's Country RFD in 2022. good times.

They plan to sell hundreds of thousands of these. The burden of home delivery will become much harder, so should cost more.

I believe this is what they were doing for a while now. When I got my Gen1 in February 2023 I had to go to Brooklyn which sucked. Gen 2 in April 2025.

Sorry I don't know every 70 year old law. And sarcastic questions like "haven't they ever purchased a car" are not helpful. I believe the law is to transport the vehicle to a dealership. So where's that Rivian dealership at? Sarcasm 😁 So in a few years when vehicles can drive point to point, wouldn't it be cool to buy a vehicle online and have it drive itself to your door? Maybe lawmakers should review these laws so they are relevant for the next 70 years.

So when you bought your first new car you never looked at the contract and wondered about the destination fee, the documentation fee, etc. And tried to negotiate out of paying an extra $1000 or whatever? And never learned that it is non negotiable and the same for everyone, regardless of where you live? This has nothing to do with Rivian, it is the way automobiles are sold in this country. It's also not some arcane secret knowledge - you can't read anything anywhere about the car buying process without encountering this information.

Nothing mandates that a fee must be charged, and nothing mandates the amount of that fee, just that the fee is the same for everyone. This has nothing to do with the actual cost of delivery, just like prices in general have little to do with the cost of most items.
