I expect the delta between the R2 Prem RWD Long Range and Model Y Prem RWD to be even larger than 57miles.

R2 AWD have front motor clutch disconnect while Tesla is using induction front motor on Model Y AWD. Induction motors have parasitic loss. So Model Y RWD efficiency jumps quite a bit losing that front motor.

Delta could balloon up to 70-80miles R2 RWD vs MY RWD.
The loss from free spinning an induction motor is very small. Tesla crushes the competition in AWD ranges already

There is more penalty from using an induction motor (in AWD mode) vs having a permanent magnet motor. The tradeoff is that it is much cheaper to use an induction motor and no clutch.

Theoretically in the rain or snow the front motor might spin more often a nd cause a range loss. With S3XY buttons you can disable the front motor.

5 mph more than the OOS team so not bad. A few more reports and we might get all the mileage back. 🤣
I'm hoping to see more tests on the 20" wheel/tire combo. I think at this point only State of Charge has tested that setup.

C&D runs at 75 mph though compared to 70 with OoS so it’s not apples to apples.
But one would expect 10-20 miles less range at 75mph. I wonder if any software updates may add range. Could they open up more of the battery to use?

I know this has been beat to death but I did do my own range test for my own curiosity.

- For anyone who doesn't want to watch, the summary is:
~230 miles estimated (I stopped at 1% SoC with 222 miles completed, didn't want to push due to weather)

- 20" All Terrains

- Just over 1000 miles on the tires at the start

- ~6-7 mph winds until the very end where gusts pick up with weather

- The route is almost perfect doubled back at every point, so +12 feet elevation gain total but a lot of hills overall.

- Some strange battery cooling behavior around 20% SoC is discussed near the end

This is a great test and a very useful datapoint. It makes perfect sense when compared with the other tests.
What was your altitude? There is a ~20 mile difference between sea level and 5,000 feet (n.b. State of Charge was in Colorado).
A 6 mph headwind would cost you 15-20 miles if you are driving into the wind the entire time (unlikely) and probably ~8-10 miles if a combination of headwinds, cross winds, and tail winds.
The BMS thermal dump at the end likely chewed up 5-8 miles.
The State of Charge test at 259 and your test at 230 are very consistent if you were at a lower altitude and had a 6-7 mph winds plus the battery cooling dump.
Your 230 mile range is spot on what one would expect in those conditions.

The reality is that R2 with ATs usable range (leaving a 10% - 12% buffer when you arrive at the charger) in good weather is:
  • 70 mph - 205 - 230 miles
  • 75mph - 185-205 miles
  • 80mph - 165-185 usable
  • Minus 15% - 20% at 30 degrees
  • Minus 10% - 20% in rain / wet roads
That is a real and reasonable expectation. It is 100% consistent with the pre-release model, and consistent with the initial testing. Thanks for doing the hard work of running another real-world test.
