I haven’t seen much discussion on here regarding those wanting to replace their R1 vehicles with the R2. I’d really like to see comparisons like this with the R1S max pack and LE R1’s on road trips including charging. I may replace my R1 next year before warranty expires and data like this for road trips really helps as I was thinking my R1 had longer range. Thanks again.

No pics of the burger? 👎 (edit: I see the video link now. Dang, that looks good!)

I wonder what the numbers would have been if you kept it under 70? I'd wager a big difference, boxy shape of the vehicle and all that.

Nice that you compared it with the Gen 1 R1T, those match my typical numbers exactly. So now all us holdouts know how much more efficiency we'd be getting with the R2. 😉

One would think that Rivian would release an announcement explaining the range issues that seems to be growing in frequency.

I did a lot of road trips in the western US in my 2023 R1T dual motor large battery, rated 352 miles on the OEM pirelli all seasons.

Traversing Wyoming and Utah at 85 MPH, efficiency was consistently around 2 mi/kW for a real range of 270 or so, and definitely below 250 mi in cold weather. At speeds closer to 70, efficiency was 300-310. Going slower, or driving in town I usually average a real range exceeding 350.

So far it is clear we will lose some range if we decide to get an R2. As a long time Rivian owner and Day 1 reservation holder who lives less than 3 miles from a service center, I assumed I’d get a relatively early invitation. I did not. Rivian says I’ll get an invitation in September. Same as my friends who reserved later and have never owned a Rivian.

My interest is waning and now that I have sold my R1 to a private party, I think Rivian has lost us. I assumed they’d take at least minimal steps to keep original followers and fan boys like me interested but they’ve done nothing. I guess I expected something to stoke my interest and loyalty as an early adopter and Day 1 reservation and a current owner, but that is not what I’m seeing and their lack of interest is contagious.

Probably not really much they can say other than.. "we followed the EPA guidelines". Anything else could possibly open them up to legal action I suppose.

One should not think that. The EPA tested it, Rivian used those numbers. Despite all the righteous indignation and entitlement over this, Rivian’s not lying to you. The folly is in accepting EPA estimates that have almost always been unachievable by the average driver.

I think they would disagree with the premise that there are "range issues".

Posts like this and more that will follow are sure to confirm that for most people without highly specific optimized routes will not be affected by the R2's range - at all.

If you don't want an R2 don't buy one.

Also worth keeping in mind we are in an echo chamber. Based on the data from the tracking sheet on this forum, we represent 240 orders with ~105 deliveries so far. That is undercounted a bit because not every forum participant entered data in the sheet, but it is still a far cry from the thousands of R2s shipped so far and tens of thousands more to ship in the future.

Forum enthusiasts and youtubers are a self-selecting group of purists, perfectionists, and hyper-optimizers. We are certainly not a representative sample of the R2's addressable market, and our opinions on whether the range is good or bad is largely immaterial. I suspect this whole topic will be a big nothing burger in they eyes of the general public.

If we start seeing articles in "mainstream" news (ie not exclusively EV focused outlets) about range woes, then there might be meat on this bone. Until then, I'm pretty much tuning out all of these range discussions.

Same but I'm keeping my Gen 1 R1. Had 2x super early day 1, R2 reservations and was given random late timing on both reservations. R2 is all about cutting costs and it felt like it. Tiny driver display and cheap black interior with meh seats at launch. Waiting on a Gen 3 R1 or I'll go with another brand if better options are out there. Hard to give up the quad Bosch motors though.

Thanks for the data, nice post.

I do think the tires make the R2 vs R1 apples to oranges. A more equal comparison would be an R1 on the OEM Goodyear Wranglers. Also an "all-terrain" tire that is focused on efficiency. R1 would have quite a bit more range.

That’s actually BS, whether you’re aware of it or not. The EPA does not do the tests, Rivian does, and Rivian chooses to use the most optimized and optimistic tests and scenarios. Which is technically allowed but not really ethical in practice.. Not all manufacturers do this. Makers like Hyundai and VW/Audi have faced fines in the past when the stated MPG of their gasoline cars failed to materialize in the real world. Their EVs, not coincidentally, more often meet or exceed EPA numbers in real world tests.

Tesla forged a new frontier in unmet EV range estimates because they could get away with it. Rivian has done the same. It’s not all makers.

I think there’s a self-interest aspect at play here too. Some of the RIVN bros seem so invested in seeing the stock price rise that inconvenient facts become something to explain away rather than investigate. As an R1S owner, I certainly hope Rivian succeeds—and I’d be thrilled if the stock takes off. But I’d much rather that success be built on great vehicles, real-world performance, and honest numbers, not falsehoods, half-truths, or selectively defending whatever narrative happens to be good for the stock price.

Well, I accidentally used basically my entire R2 battery between yesterday and today. 😂

I had a shoot about 70 miles away today, and when I finished, my drone finally died. So I had to drive all the way home, grab my new drone, then head back out again.

By the end of today I was at 0.7%.

My odometer went from 1,455.3 miles after charging to 100% to 1,750.4 miles, which means I drove 295.1 miles between yesterday and today.

The R2 is rated for 307 miles, so that’s about 96.1% of the rated range.

295 miles on all-terrain tires in All-Purpose mode with normal driving and one very unexpected extra trip.

Pretty happy with that.

Rivian R1T R1S Took my first road trip in the R2! -- 100% to 5% 263 miles range 1786428191275-x0

The $100 hamburger run is pretty well known in the private pilot aviation community. Doesn't sound odd to me at all.
Funny but true! My dad is a small plane pilot and fondly remember short flights to toumac, only to cross the street for McDonald’s. Other times it was plum island and a 1/4 mile walk for dinner. Gotta stay current. 😊
