happy update: I have my R2 back. Engineering eventually decided they didn't need to replace the front drive unit. They say a future software update should solve the issue I experienced.
The body shop they sent to the car to for the cosmetic work (hood alignment, some paint defects, failed cowl adhesive on A-pillars) did an amazing job. The service team was great about keeping me informed through the whole experience, and I was given an R1 loaner to use the entire time.

A+, would service again (but only if I have to).

Edit: They also did an alignment and tire rebalance. Great job on both.
Shitty reliability and build quality compensated for by great service. This is probably what puts Rivian at the bottom for reliability and at the top for customer satisfaction.

Mine is not that bad, but I just got it out of service and that was one of the line items they’re supposed to address. They said they fixed it, but it doesn’t look like it was actually addressed. I think it has to do with the quarter panel itself and not the charge port door.
The major issue I had it in for service for is that every once in a while when you went over rough surfaces, there will be a very loud rattle noise from the passenger side corner of the dash. Turns out it was something related to the hood, and that issue has been resolved. That was the worst of it. Drove a Gen 1 R1 for a day and glad I’m out of that thing.

It’s not about quality. Every video I’ve seen and every demo car at Rivian is like this. Even people who say, “Mine is okay” then post a video, and you can clearly see that it’s not okay.

The charge ports of the R2’s I posted in the random R2 pics thread In the delivery room had what I would call “perfect” compared to mine. Inline with the body, not crooked and even gaps all the way around.

I've never seen any perfectly aligned yet, like on any other car.

Yes. And that’s why I said “compared to mine”. Nothing in this world is perfect. but it was perfectly acceptable compared to what I have on my vehicle.
I’m willing to live with what I have, but what Gjeebs has is absolutely unacceptable.

I hope some journalist brings this up to Rivian in their next interview to ask why they decided to redesign the chargeport door. When they showed off the R2 two years ago, it was a up-down flap on the right-hand side. Why didn’t they keep that same design and just move it to the left-hand side when people were up in arms about it being on the wrong side?

I disagree. The fuel/charging door is something humanity pretty much perfected decades ago :) Literally every car in the world seems capable of having one that sits flush and aligned properly, except the R2.

But jokes aside, what bothers me much more is the process behind it. The person who installed that door saw it. Someone in QA presumably saw it. Someone doing the final inspection saw it. And yet they keep shipping cars like this as if nothing is wrong.

They even had the same visibly misaligned door on cars at their huge R2 launch event, where you would expect them to hand-pick and obsessively inspect every vehicle on display. That says a lot more to me than one random bad panel gap.

I don’t know, maybe people need to start refusing delivery over stuff like this so Rivian finally has a reason to fix it.

I’ve heard that the R2 HVAC can be noisy, but I’m not sure if this is the noise people are talking about. Apparently, Rivian Service inspected it and said this level of HVAC noise is normal.

It almost sounds like one of the vanes or whatever directs the airflow is loose and at a certain angle and fan speed will be reproducible.

For what it’s worth, my wife’s R2 does not make this noise...

Feels like these charge ports will get a redesign at some point. Mine has started making this noise when hinging. Also was never really aligned from the factory, next service I’ll have them attempt to fix it.

Mine looks like that as well. If I have to take in for service I'll see if they can do anything
