<first time posting here>

Taking the delivery in 10 days (excited!!). This got me thinking, it isn't a bad idea to have a list of commonly reported issues from fellow forum members about their issues (and resolutions) with R1's.

The fact that many individuals don't realize their automobile has a problem (such as dash shaking, wind noise at higher speeds, whirring or static noise coming from behind the steering, slight wheel misalignment, etc.) or blissful ignorance (they naively assume a new car can't have any issues because they would manifest themselves in a breakdown in some way).

Anyhow, the purpose of this list is to help everyone here better understand their R1 problems, not to disparage Rivian. Additionally, they can let their SC (service center) know how to solve similar issues.

Body Panel mis-alignment
  1. Passenger front doors mis-aligned. When the vehicle has been in the sun the rear passenger door actually rubs on the front door and it damages the paint.
  2. Hood is miss-aligned
  3. Tailgate is miss-aligned so it’s sunk in on the drivers side when shut, obvious from the top.
Wind Noise
  1. Triangle window trim gaps
  2. Gaps to left and right of A-pillar and windshield
  3. Appliqué above front windshield is not higher than glass roof
NVH (Noise Vibrations & Harshness)
  1. Vibration of AC compressor in pedal (RESOLUTION: The bolts securing the compressor were loose causing it to vibration)
  2. Ticking/Tocking noise at low speed start/stop or when in reverse or braking at low speed (RESOLUTION: Front halfshafts not torqued correctly and missing application of grease to half-shaft splines)
  3. Steering wheel shake at highway speeds (70+mph)
  4. Rattling dashboard speaker grille
Fob/Key
  1. Phone as a key still does not pair or gets removed from pairing often
  2. Proximity locking/unlocking with the Fob does not work consistently

Exterior Misc
  1. Wheel alignment from factory is off, vehicle veers to right or left when wheel is kept straight (RESOLUTION: redo the wheel balancing and alignment)
  2. Underbody screws missing/falling out and/or underbody panels falling off
  3. Uneven suspension, ie either passenger or driver side is lower/higher (RESOLUTION: height sensor replacement)
  4. At low speed or stopped the steering wheel makes a creaking sound when turned more than 90 degrees.
Interior Misc
  1. Plastic above and behind rear seats is loose and rattles
  2. Passenger or driver side A pillar cover has a wrinkle right by the speaker
  3. Blank or locked back screen
AC
Problem: Loud noise when AC is ON in hot weather
RIVIAN acknowledges the problem with their AC system making loud noise but no resolution yet or promise to get it fixed for existing customers

Reported conditions to trigger the AC noise:
  • When cabin is hot (90F+), turning ON the AC in Auto starts the loud noise.
  • At night (< 90F) after pre-conditioning the cabin for 10 mins to 72F, noise stops but if you stop and keep the door open noise starts again.
  • After car cabin was pre-conditioned to 72F for over an hour during (~20 mins drive + ~40 mins charging session), noise started when driving back home from charger.
  • During DCF charging session after ~5 minutes, loud noise for rest of the charging session.
12V battery
Problem: 12V battery randomly dies.
NOTE: There are lot of opinions about this 12V battery "issue" on the forums, which can be categorized as:
  • Very dis-satisfied and somewhat angry/frustrated with this issue since it is not cheap vehicle and raising questions on their QC (quality control)
  • Sympathetic with Rivian (early adoptor tax, every manufacture has issues, dont-buy-it-if-you-hate-it, suck-it-up, etc)
  • Owner error (drain the main battery to 0% which drains the 12V) - in this case 12V battery repair/replacement may not be covered under vehicle warranty

To add to the list for gen1 problems I had:
- ac box filling with condensation water and corroding coils ( gen2 ac box is better I was told)
- suspension dampers brackets corrode with road salt up to failure at 34000 miles. Hydraulic dampers Replacement needed. (Gen 2 version promised to be more resistant)
- cracked sky glass window , replacement is only possible with purple reflecting glass ( outside appears purple, from inside, same as oem)
-‘V’ of rivian letter fell of from one door
