Would you go with 20" wheels or 21" wheels on Launch Edition R2?

I wonder if the 20" AS might be a (secret?) no-cost option on Performance, otherwise some devoted to 20" but not wanting to cough up more $ to downsize wheels might drop themselves down to Premium?

Otherwise Rivian might own-goal itself?

Agree completely. The employee who gave me the $3k quote was clear there were other components included in the package, but wasn't clear whether one had to buy the package or could just opt for the tires separately. Let's see.

He, too, was absolutely sold on the 20" ATs.

If the $3k includes a spare and additional underbody protection along with the AT, then we talking.

A representative at the Denver unveiling of the R2 told me the 20" AT was an option for $3k extra. He mentioned undercoating as well, and so maybe the $3k was for the 20" tires and other improvements as well.

R1 gets AT 20" wheels/tires, spare, underbody shield, and couple drive modes for $3,700. Curious to see what R2 AT turns out to be.

The major difference in the R1 is that the 20" wheels are forged, while all other wheels are cast. That difference alone is probably more of a cost differentiator than anything else that's bundled with it.

I have not heard anything to say that the 20" wheels on the R2 are a different construction from the 21" wheels. On a car in the R2's price range, forged wheels feel a little less likely.

It is stated on the Rivian site I believe that the 20” are forged.

I will opt for 20". In my experience, it is best to have more sidewall than less. Better ride quality and better durability. The range difference, to me is minimal.

I have a 2019 Corvette Stingray. The C7 (7th generation) started out in 2014 with 18" in the front, and 19" in the rear. At some point, GM decided to increase the sizes by 1" (reducing sidewall). So mine came with 19" front and 20" rear.

I have never had so much trouble with tires. Went through 2 complete sets of very pricey tires in less than 20k miles. Sidewall tears, pictures, etc.

I swapped out my wheels and tires, going back to the original sizes, as determined may the original designers. In 15k miles, I have never had another tire problem.

Yes, I will opt for the 20" on my R2.

I likes the looks of the 21" but the tire option is making me think twice.

Per Rivian Assistant, both 20" and 21" wheels are both forged aluminum for the Performance

The R2 offers a range of wheel options, each designed for a different kind of adventure and aesthetic. Here’s a quick look:

  • The 19" Machined Graphite All-Season wheel is aluminum, with a bright machined finish and graphite metallic pockets, paired with Pirelli all-season tires.
  • The 20" Bicolor Carbon All-Season wheel is aluminum, with satin machined details and satin carbon pockets, paired with Pirelli all-season tires.
  • The 20" Black Sand All-Terrain wheel is forged aluminum, with a machined face, dark satin tint, and black pockets, paired with BF Goodrich all-terrain tires.
  • The 21" Liquid Tungsten All-Season wheel is forged aluminum, with a machined face finished in liquid tungsten tint and dark pockets, paired with Pirelli all-season tires.

Secret? No.

If you want Performance and can't live with the BFG pseudo-ATs, you pay out-of-pocket to buy the AS tires from SC, the same ones on the 20-inch "Bicolor" AS option of Premium trim, like you would at any dealership's service/parts dept., take delivery of them and go elsewhere for installation or pay SC their $250/hr labor rate to have them swapped in... and leave with both sets and do what you will with the "old" set.

Going elsewhere, like a tire shop, you can pay them a disposal fee to take the "old" set off of your hands. And going this route, you probably get charged less than $250/hr to have new tires swapped.

Y'all are overthinking this.

I'm doing the LE with the no cost 21" wheels. I'll be getting a second set of aftermarket 20" Volks TE37 with a set of AS tires. No AT tires for me.

Is there a Volk fitment? And those BFGs are not real ATs. They're just AS with some AT-ish treads in order to get slightly more traction in loose dirt and the 3PMSF rating.

Do we know for sure that the Rivian version of the BFG is actually 3PMSF rated? I've looked at images from Rivian events and couldn't see the mark on the tire wall.

Additionally, while the BFG website states "The BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A tire is severe snow rated with a three-peak mountain snowflake symbol.[2]", the superscript states "[2] Excludes Original Equipment tires."

Yes, TE37 M-Spec 20x9 5x114.3 37mm 73.1-64.1 centering rings. I’ll run these as a second set also for the Tri Motor whenever they become available
