During Wednesday’s earnings call, the mercurial CEO put it as bluntly as ever.

“Unfortunately, Hardware 3 — I wish it were otherwise — but Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD,” he said, saying that its “memory bandwidth” is the “chokepoint.”

I'm sure he believed (esp. at first) that HW3 could get to FSD.

I'm sure he was plainly aware that there was a very high possibility that he was wrong, and as time went on he knew the chances of HW3 being sufficient were slim-to-none.

I'm sure that despite this, he decided it was important to continue to say that HW3 was powerful enough.

I'm sure he'll somehow get away with it this time, as he has since 2016.

Was Rivian charging customers for full FSD that was only a short time away, yet never seemed to actually materialize? Because Tesla had been doing that for years.

Not yet! But then I just bought autonomy+ so there’s still a chance (and as you may see in other threads I paid for what it has today, and am certainly not holding my breath for the dream others are latching on to - but if it arrives I’ll be super happy).

That said well after gen1’s were being delivered they were still advertising the hardware was capable of much more than they ever were able to achieve. When I bought my 1st Rivian in February 2023 a large part of the marketing was still around hands free driving very soon…

At the end of the day we are all victims of the Musk effect. Ultimately Rivian answers to its shareholders, and for some reason they, at a macro level, seem to like the approach of the Tesla CEOs style (I’m basing this on nothing other than market cap as a function of revenue) and so am not surprised to see some similar movement and bold statements from Rivian as it’s constantly compared to Tesla.

Considering the 'replacement' process supposedly consists of building almost hundreds of 'microfactories' so that the service centers don't get overwhelmed, this just seems like yet another attempt to goose the share price.

No, he absolutely did not say that. Now, I’ve consistently called Elmo a lying weasel and untrustworthy, but also, that he believes his own bullshit. He’s also an eternal optimist which is good and bad. We wouldn’t have an amazing global communication system if he didn’t blindly believe it could happen while everyone said it was impossible.

Anyway, it’s probable that he was just wrong and overly optimistic. Remember Rivian promised Gen 1 self driving too.
