I think it would be distracting having it sit above the screen..... that's just me. After 4 months, I am used to the infotainment system. I stream iHeartRadio all the time via Bluetooth. It would be nice to have the option of having it, but Rivian isn't going to add it anytime soon.

The reviews don't look great. Also hope you have 12V under the dash, I know the newer builds don't.

FWIW I have just been using my IPad for Gaia GPS, I have a version with GPS so it works perfectly. Having it on the main screen would be great but I also like displaying the camera views there and with rumors of a new off road menu maybe other utility I will want to use on the screen but who knows.

Saw this on a deal website, a Carpuride display for $105:
There are many similar products on amazon in the $100 to $200 range. Pages worth
examples. The second one below includes mirror link and a back up camera, cause we need cameras...

example
Amazon.com: Cartreque Portable Wireless Car Stereo, Compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 7 Inch Full HD Touchscreen, Backup View Camera, Handsfree, Mirror Link, Fm, Voice Controll, TF/USB/AUX : Electronics

All of these external Carplay/Android Auto screens are idiotic in my opinion. If you want to see and use phone apps, just use a phone mount.
It's good thing the world doesn't revolve around what you think is is idiotic. These things do address a few uses cases that mounting a phone can't or doesn't do well. They're not great, and the quality can be hit-or-miss, but they definitely do fill a niche.

Needing to use a phone mount when you have a 12" screen is also idiotic so... dealers choice I guess

If you're going to go this route.. a 9" screen as linked in the first post might be overkill/difficult to mount somewhere that it isn't in the way? Maybe one of the 7" screen units would fit batter?

Where do you mount the iPad? Last time I was on the trails, my wife was using my iPad to navigate using TrailsOffRoad and Gaia, while I had the front camera up on the main Rivian screen. I'd really like TrailsOffRoad integration with Rivian main screen. Even mirroring would be adequate. Gaia integration would be a plus.

I was able to grab this $105 option actually. We'll see how it works next time on the trail. If it's total crap, it was only $105.

I ask my dog to sit in the passenger seat and hold it up.... j/k

I don't have any kind of permanent mount but I have been able to rig up a few solutions. It kinda stays up if I jam the key board under the center console. The other solution is resort to is mounting it on top of my food storage that sits in the passenger seat. Neither solution is really that good honestly.

I totally agree and think we should just have CP/AA built into the car. But a janky second screen taped onto your dash ain't it.

I didn't realize Gaia integrated with CarPlay compatible, too:

https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/360042742234-Gaia-GPS-and-Apple-CarPlay

I actually typically export a route from TrailsOffRoad to Gaia, then use Gaia on the iPad to navigate.

I'll see how this cheap screen works on the next trail. Will just use the suction cup on the dash and have the iPad as backup or for a passenger to use for additional route information. I have a 12V in my R1T (but not in my R1S).

I'll just sell the thing if it's a complete miss. Worth a shot for $100 for me.
