Last month, after returning from a nine day trip, I got in RIS and got the below warning (Exit SUV and stay away for your safety - Risk of exposure to hazardous fumes.). Checking the app it said their was a problem with the 12 volt battery. After having me reboot the car and brick it, Rivian did come out to tow and fixed the problem. Their response was that I should have kept the vehicle plugged in while I was gone. This doesn't sound right but hoping to get some thoughts here. I had charged to 70 % before leaving. Also had I parked at the airport it also would have sat unused for the fulltime.

Should I leave plugged in if I am away for a while? Has anybody gotten this warning before?

FWIW, you did nothing wrong.

Now you can't keep your Rivian unplugged for 9 days without causing a 12V battery problem? Sometimes the BS that comes from Rivian employees is just unbelievable

My reply to that BS would be "okay, now show me in the owners manual where it says that"!

What the heck... this is ridiculous!

Your "parking at the airport" scenario is spot on. I'll be doing exactly that later this year so I guess they think this is what I should expect upon return? Eek

My kid's barbie jeep had a better 12v battery
I made both of my boat batteries, in the 3 years I've been using them, they have never stranded me at sea!

Maybe Rivian can commission me to build a 12V Lithium battery for them :D

It’s an isolated incident. I agree that it sucks but let’s not over react. I’ve left my truck at the airport a dozen times this year and up to two weeks and it’s been fine everytime.

lol I don’t know who you were talking to, but the guidance to leave it plugged in while away is silly. I can’t imagine they would actually pin this issue on you, but if they do, I would certainly push back.

Of course you should be able to leave your Rivian unplugged for several weeks at a time as long as your traction battery is sufficiently charged to cover that period. And that's why it's ridiculous that a Rivian employee told the OP that he should have left his Rivian plugged in for the 9 days he was away even though he was at 70% SOC before starting his trip.
