Yes, I'm aware there are 38 different choices for a 20" rivian tire. What still seems to be up in the air is what is the best tie to reclaim the range to meet or beat the 21s.
I'm dying for this answer as well ?Yes, I'm aware there are 38 different choices for a 20" rivian tire. What still seems to be up in the air is what is the best tie to reclaim the range to meet or beat the 21s.
In my opinion, for range, the best of both worlds would be meet or beat 21" range @ $250-325 per tire. What I can't understand is that on Tesla there is a 6-10% range increase going from stock 21s to 19s. And even a couple more percent when running a 19" winter tire with a half inch less width. There should be more concrete experience/ opinions for Rivian when going 21 to 20. And maybe the All Season Pirelli is it, I don't know. There are great options in the 275/60R20 size (33”), including:
General Grabber HTS60 (only 34#, 8.6” wide)
Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 (Costco X LT; 40#, 8.7” wide)
Nitto Recon Grappler A/T (46#, 9.1” wide)
Always be trade offs, if you want the best of all worlds, then sticking with OEM tires is prob. Best for 90% of people…if range is what you care about most then need to get 40# or less tires, the grabbers being the lightest of them all…
This is not true. Others and I have stated clearly that the Defender M/S2 gets efficiency equivalent to the 21" AS.Michelin Defenders, whether Platinum or M/S2, are producing mixed results with more folks claiming it’s either less or about the same range as the Pirelli ATs.
There are plenty of people on here replaced their stock Pirelli AT with 275/60/20 all season tires and get way better efficiency. The michelin defender LTX m/2 has 116 load rating just like the stock tires and discount tires would install this. They don't ever install anything that is not within spec. I believed many of them achieved almost same number as the 21".So bottom line for me today: Stock Pirelli ATs on 20” are still the range king for that Rivian setup. 21” OEM setup is overall range king. No alternative tires out there for 20” today that significantly and definitively improve range (whether or not you’re trying to stay within OEM weight specs).
You have to also consider that an R1 that was originally equipped with 20" ATs going to a Defender MS/2 in 275/60/20 will be a smaller diameter due to the shorter sidewall- closer to the 21", which without a re-calibration from Rivian service will give you optimistic range and efficiency numbers versus the actual. Most of the folks here who did this and report better efficiency did not re-calibrate their vehicles software to show more realistic numbers. There are plenty of people on here replaced their stock Pirelli AT with 275/60/20 all season tires and get way better efficiency. I'm talking about folks that had 21" and switched to 275/60/20 wheels. According to tires size caluclator, the new 275/60/20 is 0.3% LARGER in diamter of the 21" . Literally 32.9" to 33". I don't see the need to get rivian to re calibrate. What remains to be seen are more efficiency data points from R1's that were originally running OEM 20" Pirelli AT who when switched to an AS tire in the original 275/65/20 tire size. The Defender MS/2 is not available in that size. Only the Defender LTX Platinum is, and there are only a handful of owners running that tire at the moment.
There are quite a few of us (myself included) that have 20" wheels and OEM 275/65/20 Pirelli AT tires and are interested in any potential efficiency gains in switching to an AS tire of the same size and not re calibrating to the smaller 275/60/20 tire (33" diameter). As ATL R1S said, the Defender MS/2 is not available in the OEM size. Only the Defender LTX Platinum is and opinions and experiences seem to vary as to actual efficiency gains. Any actual data for this specific case would be appreciated.I'm talking about folks that had 21" and switched to 275/60/20 wheels.
