Let’s say you’re an early R1T preorder holder with a $1,000 deposit placed in 2019 and you’re still waiting due to Rivian’s f‘d up delivery priority.

What has that $1,000 done for you? What’s the lost opportunity cost? Assuming January 2019 to now, if you’d invested that $1,000 in a lowly S&P 500 index fund, it’d be worth approximately $1,700 now. Really makes one appreciate Rivian’s decision to take away the wristband key from Adventure orders…

(and yeah, I know it’s even worse for the broken promises for R1S preorder holders. Sorry guys.)

Well, the flip side of that....if your pre-order was prior to March '22 (before price hike), you're not doing too terribly. My config would now cost me over $100K, but the pre-order price is less 20k.

Aside from that...having waited now more than 3 years for an R1S, the frustration is starting to sink in, especially seeing R1Ts being delivered to customers w/ some pre-order dates over a year later than mine. Oh well...

Sorry, but the market could have just as easily gone down during the same period. In that case, Rivian deposit would have looked like a great investment. And either way, that $1K also locked up massive savings on the price of the vehicle. You come out ahead in every way (assuming you go through with the purchase).

I think everyone who placed deposits early knew that is was basically just a gamble. Hope for the best, but expect the worst. That was certainly my mentality when I placed my pre-order.

If you placed your deposit with the assumption that your $1000 would appreciate, then I think you misunderstood.

Just imagine I did the same with the $75,000 I was going to spend on the truck.

I am less concerned about opportunity cost regarding the $1,000 and more concerned about the fact people with more recent pre-order dates are getting deliveries and that Rivian hasn't been transparent on why. I got an update on my Lightning today and if my June/July window is pushed back it certainly looks like a Ford EV will beat Rivian to my garage.

Well that's crap. Can't wait to see the price tag on that.
Land Rover one retails at $200US, which is not so bad compared to keyfob which are often 2-3x.

I wager rivian’s one will be similar.

To be fair, I haven't even received the activity key with my LE and two emails to my guide and one to customer service about it haven't been responded to.

I concur with the delivery priority being pretty crap, but the 'what I could have done with my $1000' premise is nothing more than mental masturbation. You could have purchased Tesla stock, cocaine, an assassin, or lit it on fire. We all make choices based on t he best information we have at the time for our particular situations. Time change and no plan survives contact with the enemy.

RIP the 180 degree tailgate.

I wonder if the launch editions that don't plan on using the band could sell them? I'm sure rivian would have to program it to your truck who knows what they charge for that.

I couldn't agree more with this. Look, I am really quite frustrated at this point. I keep seeing these trucks getting delivered, including in my location, that were ordered long after me and can't get any explanation as to why. I have said I will take whatever R1T they will give me, but I continue to just sit here and wait, seemingly making zero progress (and most of my communications are just ignored). So I really do appreciate the frustration of the OP here.

HOWEVER, the $1,000 opportunity cost argument just doesn't hold water. How about you tell Rivian you want them to round up your deposit to $1,700 since that's what it could have been, and in return they get to give you updated pricing. The reality is the $1,000 deposit turned into a $15k-$20k discount, so I don't think any of us did that bad from an "investment" perspective.
