Some people have more sensitivity to certain frequencies. Without back to back comparison, impossible to tell if it's indeed abnormal. One person's definition of "loud" could be insignificant to someone else. The Bosch motors do have more noise than other EVs. Another possibility is the gear noise from the reduction gears, and the oil being used to lubricate them—and if Rivian changed to a different oil between the years.

So I've got one that's a few behind yours (vin in the 30xx). I recently had the subframe retrofitted to the gen 2 subframe, a new front drive unit installed, the revised jounce lines installed, and all the associated hardware (brake lines, bolts, screws, etc) replaced. Anyways, the noise is WAY less... If I had to put a number on it, I'd say it's like 30%-40% quieter. My original drive unit was very whiny.

The way I knew it made a difference is that even my wife noticed the difference.

Now the question will be, did my older drive unit just get louder over time? If so, then I'd assume this one will too... Time will tell I guess.

Fact. My LE quad motor noise is noticeably louder than my wife's ID 4 dual motor.

I also know it isn't mostly tire noise because the sound of the motors was there with 20" AT's and didn't go away or get quieter when I changed to 22" AS. The tire noise did get a lot quieter.

can you be more specific than “loud”? what type of noise? my 22 quad LE (5000ish vin) 20 inch a/t and is fairly quiet… no gear whine, faint electrical hum. i’ve driven maybe 3/4 different loaners including one this past week which was a 4000 vin 22 adventure quad 21”. i noticed it seemed to have a lot more gear whine. maybe it was tires but it sounded more metal/mechanical.

i feel like every rivian i’ve been in felt drove a little differently.

i just chalked it up to manufacturing tolerances / qa not being totally dialed in on a new assembly line.

compared to window highway noise and some mysterious rattles that feel like stuff is loose in the frunk the motor noise hasn’t seemed like much of an issue.

I had my 2022 Gen 1 R1T in for service recently and got a late Gen 1 R1S quad as a loaner. No difference in motor noise, but the "tock" that I've gotten used to on my truck wasn't present, and the pedal tuning/motors were much smoother at lower speeds.

November 23 vin 23,2xx quad (gen 1.5? as the front subframe is cast). I test drove a 24 trimax and did not find much of a difference in noise (or acceleration).

I had my 2022 quad vin in the 1600’s - I noticed that my motors are quite a bit louder than the 2023 quad - Am I imagining this or do others notice this as well?
On my 2023 R1T I had some clicking when accelerating/decelerating and lots of road noise/wear issues on the tires.

They found a defect in the half shaft joint and replaced the front hubs/half shafts and its much better.

They also did a full alignment and the noise is way down.

Drives like a different truck. Worth it other than the pain of Rivian service apts.

Haven’t driven another Rivian other than my Nov 22 build, but going from a Model 3 to my R1T, the motors were noticably louder. The Telsa was downright quiet, the Rivian has a definite whine, but I’m just used to it now.

I'd say my 2023 quad is quieter than the 2022's I drove. It is louder than both my model 3's but they only have 2 motors. For motor noise, my S Plaid with 3 motors has more motor noise than my 3's but less than my quad. I'd also say the quad's motor noise is a bit more distinctive than the Teslas.

If rated them on a scale of 1 to 10, from quiet to loud. I'd put my original Gen 3 at about a 3.5, my Highland 3 at about a 2, my S Plaid at a 4. and my R1T at 5.5. I think overall the Teslas did much better with sound deadening on the S and Highland 3. The Highland 3 is quieter in every area. Some areas are vastly better and at worst, they are noticeably better.

I think the RIT's motor noise fades more into the background at high speeds than some of my Teslas and I think my S's motor noise peaks at about 60-70 mph when the power is full ramped up.

About 5k miles in on my truck and I have to say I still like the motor whine.
