I just discovered that my Cayenne uses a lithium ion battery and it is a $2000 battery when it needs to be replaced. Strangely, the year before my model 2019 in 2018,used a lead-acid AGM battery but for 2019-2023 they switched to a lithium ion battery. 2024+ switched back to AGM.

It made me wonder what our 2024 R1S quad motor 12v battery is. And where it’s located. I googled and it said 2024 models used one lead-acid 12v battery located underneath driver seat but don’t know if it is easy to swap out yourself. 2022-2023 models used two lead-acid 12v batteries. So Rivian uses lead-acid and not lithium ion for their 12v batteries correct?

I’m wondering if 2025 models changed the battery type.

2024 is a single lead-acid (AGM or SLA) under the hood, near the air filter.

2025 changed to a single lead-acid under the passenger seat.

is that a group size BT19BL-BS ?

I couldn’t find it at auto zone near me
I don't remember, but you won't find one on the shelf at any auto parts store.

So you have to order the battery through Rivian? Anyone know how much it cost?
They are pricy, but Rivian won't sell them directly. They will replace them for $400-$700 depending on configuration. They do have a three-year warranty though.

Ohmmu is lithium. I thought BMS didn't like the switch. True?

Truck BMS doesn't really care and the Ohmmu has its own BMS. That said, the charging cycle may be less than ideal, but the hope is that the Ohmmu BMS can handle the variations.

(I stand corrected. See Godfodder’s post above)

If needed, I got a pic somewhere of my old Rivian battery when it was replaced.

Also, when the tech replaced the battery, he disabled the onboard electronics from pulling from the 12v until reconnected. I’ve replaced many batteries in ICE vehicles without disabling on-board electronics but am more concerned about frying something in the Rivian than in other vehicles.
