What are they using for driver attention detection?

The Rivian Autonomy Platform+ adds a new advanced feature to enhance the highway driving experience. Enhanced Highway Assist allows you to use Highway Assist while letting go of the steering wheel for extended periods, in certain driving situations, as long as you’re looking at the road. Enhanced Highway Assist relies on Driver Attention Detection to confirm that you’re paying attention to the road ahead of you.
Gen 2’s have a camera in the review mirror that monitors the driver. I believe they are enabling that in this update. That camera will verify the driver is paying attention to the road.

I think the Gen 1 also has a mirror camera that is currently disabled. Maybe I dreamed that one.

This is for in city driving. So if you're not paying attention to when the light turns green, and traffic starts to move, it'll chime to get your attention to tell you to go
Rivian has always had chimes to remind you to move in city traffic. It’s called the drivers behind you.:CWL:

Just hoping the dual motor engagement jerkiness has gone / reverted back to how it previously was! ?
So I'm not dreaming this. Thought maybe something mechanical was failing in my rear motor / drive unit.

Seems like the change for ‘hands free driving’ is not really delivering anything other than under the right conditions detecting driver attention via eye tracking from the mirror camera rather than the capacitive steering wheel sensor. Neat, but not really a massive jump.

Ok, I have thought more about this enhanced highway assist feature. It's cool, but what is the practical use of the notion that you can take your hands off the wheel, but your eyes have to be looking forward? What is the real use case of that? If I have to keep my eyes looking forward, why would it matter if I could take my hands off the wheel? In what scenarios is this helpful practically, when I am actually driving and using it?
I have it in my Mach-E and use it to eat snacks or rest my hands while driving on long road trips. In addition the driver alertness can (accurately in my experience) detect drowsiness and warn you to rest.

Nope, you’ll see there’s a few others on here with the same issue.

With that many, I'm surprised I haven't made the list.

I really hope this comes out before my road trip next Friday.
I hope your road trip is more exciting than a trip to the Franklin SC Donald...but hands off driving would maybe make that trek easier for us ?

Everyone else can keep their chimes, dings, and dongs. The less prompting noises and vibrations coming out and interrupting the music, conversations, or anything else, the better.

It will probably be cheaper. The last time I had to go to the SC in Franklin, I spent the time waiting on the truck being repaired at Green Hills Mall.

If I were considering a new Rivian, I'd be watching these release thread conversations to see how long they support a previous gen. If they deprecate support very quickly, I'd be very leery of buying anything from that company, as if you have any issues, there may be no fixes.

Quite honestly, it is concerning to me how quickly the Gen 1 became yesterday's news to Rivian. Fortunately, I took the approach when I bought a used Rivian, that the current functionality shipping would meet my needs while hoping no major bug fixes were required. For original owners of Gen 1's they didn't have the luxury of reading the land a little bit and bought in good faith. I am not 100% sure that was warranted as I see how Driver+ has played out. My friend's 5 year old Tesla has seen better support...

I am still shocked that there isn't a texting app, especially at this price point. I guess that is why you need hand's free driving so you can actually text. :p
It was designed in like 2017/18. Yes, COVID delayed but essentially we have over 7 years of updates still occuring. That is 2 years longer than most gen My truck in 2 years is infinitely better. Not sure how many more meaningful updates can occur but items like changing wheel size is amazing compared to most vehicles. Im surprised that some in this forum are "upset" with Rivian. We have continued to have great update after geat update for almost 3 years. My other cars aren't even close to this level of improvement/fixes.

I drive hands free for about 45 seconds on trips which is perfect for me. Keeps me engaged but also allows rest to make trips easy.

You do bring up my final pet peeve on voice text. Also just need an opening back window on T, but doubt software can do that.

I agree. I have a Gen 2 now, but I started with my R1T in 2022, and from that time to when I traded it in for my trimax, I would estimate that I had double the features it came with originally. Rivian greatly exceeded my expectations. I think that Rivian has done so well, which is why so many nitpick and complain about Rivian's software. Rivian has given people so much in the way of features since the release of the truck, and people are spoiled.

For all I hear about Tesla's software, I wasn't impressed on a test drive. I didn't try their ADAS, but the buttons for turn signals and having to shift on the screen, the lack of a stitched-together camera view, and the layout of the menus weren't very intuitive.
