I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience with their R1S. Every morning when I reverse (temp 50F) , I notice a jerky motion. This only happens when the vehicle has been sitting overnight or hasn’t been driven for several hours. After that initial jerkiness, it drives smoothly for the rest of the day. Is there a fix for this, or is it just normal behavior?

Same happens with my G2 R1T however, I’m backed into my garage and pull out nose-first. This is only at very slow speed while clearing the garage door frame. It’s fine after and seems like it’s normal when everything is cold.

I’ve also noticed that if I warm up the cabin before reversing, the jerkiness seems to be reduced. I’m wondering if something may need to be calibrated.

Are you referring to the feeling from the electronic parking brake releasing?

I was going to say it may be some kind of cold weather thing/parts need to warm up. But 50 F is not that cold at all.

Yeah it shouldn't need to warm up ( in garage). I also have a Tesla and it doesn't get the jerkiness. If it's a normal behavior of the Rivian, then they need to do a better job.

I have this quite regularly when first backing up, especially at a high state of charge. It's like the friction brakes a biting rather than using regen to slow it smoothly. For example, if I'm backing out of a parking spot and apply a little bit of the accelerator pedal, if I lift off, it feels like I'm slamming on the brakes. I can repeat it by touching the pedal again and lifting off. It doesn't seem to do this except for when first starting up.

I would understand this behavior if it ONLY happened when I was fully charged but it occasionally happens when I'm not 85+ as well.

Have you taken it in for service and if so what did they say?

My Gen 1 had the option to turn brake assist off when using regen. That option seems to be gone under Gen 2 and I'd like to have it back!

Would you describe it as the regen being just too aggressive in reverse? That used to be a problem initially, lots of people complained, but they dialed that way back long ago - that change happened maybe in 2023/2024. Mine has felt smooth backing up ever since.

Regardless, if that's the way it feels, maybe it is related to your battery state of charge or temperature or even your regen settings. Or maybe you're backing out before all systems are up and running? Maybe it's detecting the side of your garage and trying to stop you from hitting it? Maybe you're shifting around in your seat and triggering the no driver behavior like it does when you lift off the seat? Does this happen if you stop in front of the house and try to reverse, it only if you're coming out of the garage?

Could be lots of things. Doesn't sound like expected behavior, but could be explainable.

Can't say I've ever experienced any such behavior in almost 3 yrs of ownership. So perhaps just a Gen2 thing.

These are the brake pads stuck to the rotors from sitting overnight on cold weather. Normal.
Doesn't seem like this is what OP is describing though. Has never happened to my Gen 2 Tri in freezing weather.

Yeah that's a thing but I wouldn't describe that as jerkiness when reversing, that's more of a loud clunk when starting to move in any direction after a period of idleness. Usually happens if your rotors are wet in my experience.
