1. You can tell that whole Range Extender thing was shoehorned in at the last minute by oil lobby politicians at the reveal directly interfering in the business decisions. Expect more of this oil lobby demands in a certain possible upcoming administration.

2. I thought their “one last thing” would be to roll out a Rally car to go up against the R3X. Instead they went the opposite way to a Range Extender. lol. I bet that version is well above $100k.

3. No timetable release that I saw? Does this mean around 2028?
1. Yep, although I would buy one with a range extender if it's well implemented.

3. 2027 target for production. Doubt they will deliver before 2028 based on not having a factory or final design yet.

That interior is sweet. If it has CarPlay count me in.

Scout Terra truck is closer to Ford F150 Lightning size than a Rivian R1T.

Bigger truck than I expected

I see no reason to reach for the tinfoil hat. Range anxiety is real for first-time EV buyers. And for towing, where your all-electric range could be halved, range extender is a good solution until battery tech improves. The generator doesn't need to be a big thirsty engine. It can be a simple 1 cylinder motor that runs at a low constant RPM (like any generator, hello?!).

Electrek has more info in writing. Scout is targeting 2027. Now does that mean actual year or model year (i.e. late '26), that much isn't clear (and likely intentional).

I don’t envy them announcing/working on a vehicle right now. I feel there’s a fair bit of uncertainty concerning the regulatory environment going forward (all I’ll say, I swear!).

I can understand the desire to include a range extender as many people making the switch have range concerns. However, it’s a fair bit off and it’s not clear how things will stand in 2027+.

Might not be a bad idea to hedge your bets and put in a reservation.

Take away: Rivian has nothing to worry about. And, with EVs, the more the merrier. We're not even 10% of the entire car market. There is room for everyone and more. The chicken littles need to chill.
On the surface, there seems to be a lot of DNA sharing here - even marketing, service, shop, buying process, etc. I'm wondering if there’s more of a connection to Rivian than they’ve let on so far.

No. And No again. The scope of joint venture is only limited to the simplified zonal computing platform (gen 2 refresh) and software development stack. And that shared components (like Nvidia chips) could be ordered together in one large sum, for better volume price break. That's it. No more. RJ left the door open for future expansion of terms. The future is not here yet.

Somehow the SUV might be worse. 7 inches longer with the spare wheel carrier. 82 inch width for R1S with mirrors folded and 91.6 inch width for the Traveler with mirrors unfolded.

So it is longer and wider, yet doesn't have a third row of seats. And to top it off, it has 3 inches less ground clearance.

This might compete with the R1S, and I can't wait to see them offroading against each other, but it also kind of feels like the Traveler will kind of sit between the R1S and R2. The R2 will be another 2 row SUV with an offroad mindset, but will be substantially smaller and cheaper. I guess how well the Traveler does against the R1S might be partly about how much all the options add to the price.

But now here is the fun part: this should push Rivian. Now they know what the competition is and they know what to aim for with the Gen3 R1S, which, if they stick to a somewhat standard refresh cycle, could be coming out a year or two after these Scouts debut.

The range extender sounds cool but it seems pointless to me. Why not just have an EV with 450 range? or even 500 range? Seems like they didn't bother or gave up on developing something new and just took what tech is available now and slapped it together.

We're already at 400+ miles in a large vehicle with only batteries. The range extender seems like a gimmick.

Keep in mind that both Scout cars will be using Rivian’s ECU and low level software

I’m getting the feeling that today’s reveal was subject to extreme change in regards to the possibly chaotic next few years (we’ll not get into that here) And that the actual final designs will be quite different once actual production begins.

The biggest difference will be price. I bet you can decide for yourself in which direction that will go.

Well done VW

Now I actually hope that Rivian gets access to the IP for the gas range extender and the better frontend design

By the time this thing comes out, we will see new versions of the R1. But I really like the retro styling of the SUV. ?

A gas burning extender is not on-brand for Rivian.
