Own a 2024 R1T (Gen1), got it at the end of March. I've had speaker rattle issues from delivery. I'm now on my 5th service request just for the speaker rattle. Every time they "fix" the rattle, it goes away for a couple hours then comes right back. I'm almost embarrassed to even ask this, but should I try for a lemon for this truck? I've had other major issues that have had the truck at the service center for almost a month also. I do love the truck, but this is just getting frustrating. Anyone have similar issues and if it got resolved?

There is no way a simple (as annoying as it may be) rattle would qualify as a lemon. This almost ALWAYS requires a safety or useability concern.

Yeah that makes sense. I just wasn't sure what would qualify or not. I just keep seeing that if there is an issue that hasn't been fixed after 4 times, it qualifies for a lemon..

But I dunno haha

I recently purchased my demo 2022 R1T and I noticed a speaker rattle in the drivers door. I have a service appointment for it and a few other issues on Aug 30.

I believe mine is a busted speaker cone. They should replace the speaker and the rattle should be gone.

Definitely recommend educating yourself on the local Lemon Law. Many States Attorney's General have FAQs on their website that clearly lay out the rules and recourse you have as a consumer.

Like this:
https://www.dca.ca.gov/acp/pdf_files/lemonlaw_qa.pdf

California Lemon Law
The California Lemon Law (Civ. Code, § 1793.2 et seq.) protects you when your vehicle is defective and cannot be repaired after a “reasonable” number of attempts.

The Lemon Law applies to most new vehicles purchased or leased in California that are still under a manufacturer’s new-vehicle warranty. Full-time active-duty members of the Armed Forces stationed or residing in California at the time of purchase or lease are protected by the Lemon Law even if their vehicles were purchased or registered outside of California. The Lemon Law also applies to used vehicles when they are still under a manufacturer’s new car warranty. Any remaining time left on the warranty protects the car’s new owner.

Under the Lemon Law, the manufacturer may be required to buy back or replace your vehicle if, after a “reasonable” number of repair attempts, it cannot repair a problem that:
  • Is covered by the manufacturer’s new-vehicle warranty;
  • Substantially impairs the use, value, or safety of the vehicle; and
  • Is not caused by unauthorized or unreasonable use of the vehicle after sale.
What is considered a “reasonable” number of repair attempts depends on many factors. While the following factors are not required, there is a rebuttable presumption that your vehicle is a lemon if:
  • The problem first occurred within 18 months of delivery or 18,000 miles (whichever comes first);
  • If required by the warranty or owner’s manual, you notified the manufacturer about the problem; and
  • You have taken the vehicle in for repair by the manufacturer or its agents:
    • Four or more times for the same problem and it still is not fixed, or
    • Two or more times for the same problem, if that problem is big enough to cause death or serious injury, and it still is not fixed, or
    • The vehicle has been out of service for repair for more than 30 days (the 30 days do not need to be in a row).
If your vehicle is a lemon, the manufacturer must promptly repurchase or replace it. You have the right to choose a refund instead of a replacement.

Lemon vehicles that are bought back by dealers and then resold must be identified as a “lemon law buyback” and have a “lemon” sticker on their door. When lemon buybacks are not properly disclosed and sold “as is,” the buyer may still have rights under the Lemon Law. For additional information, see Lemon Law Buyback Vehicles.

Even if the Lemon Law does not apply in your case, other state and federal laws may protect you. These include laws that prohibit deceptive practices and require vehicles to meet minimum safety standards. For advice concerning your legal rights, consult an attorney.

First Idea
I have rear right door intermittent rattle, took him less than 5 min to take the panel off and find the wiring harness lose, tightened it and mobile tech left......didn't fix it, but LOL....I swear I have a point...for something annoying like this I feel like I as a consumer would spend more time ensuring it's fixed 100% and this would the scenario where I after 5 failed fixes (your failed fixes) would attempt to remove the door panel myself so I could investigate and determine the source....I could be the window regulator for all you know and by having them work on the speaker area they're not really fixing the problem and to me that's what's so hard about fixing rattles....referred noise.

2nd idea
For myself I have brought it in for the hood buffeting in the wind, I am fairly convinced all Rivians do this, but there are several different issues, one is the hood literally raising up at the front corners, the 2nd is the skin detenting downward at higher speed, both lead to light reflections which are distracting while driving. After the 2nd attempt with no real improvement I made a video using a go pro from a friend clearly showing the corner of the hood raising about .5-1cm while driving.

So with that I would also suggest possibly playing around with a bluetooth microphone to determine where the rattle is the loudest (panel on first) then panel off to find the source.

Lemon law return seems a bit extreme, in NY you might qualify since it ,use only be defective but there additional caveats like it must substantially lower the value to you.

I would take it to an after-market car stereo installer and have them fix it. Then try to send the bill to Rivian for reimbursement.

Do you have a video you can upload to compare to my issue?
I am in for my 3rd repair attempt for a similar issue. I get a buzzing and crackling and popping from the Driver's side dash and a pillar area. I used to get intermittent audio from there but no more audio and just an incessant buzz and crackle and popping.

  • First time they replaced the speaker next to the driver's head, not where the issue was.
  • Second time they replaced the speaker in the A pillar and scratched the grill on the dash, I opened the door at pickup and immediately heard the sounds and was not happy. The told me they fixed it and checked for function, still no audio but undesirable noise.
  • Third time it is in and they said it would be a few weeks.

I haven't ever done a lemon, nor does it feel appropriate, but the time without my vehicle and annoyance to go to the service center and get things not fixed and damaged, is getting old.
If they would fix the issue and not tell me it's done and I show up and its no better, now worse...so disheartening, but I haven't complained about it here (until this comment) or publicly because it does feel dumb and small and petty, but it should work and be right.

I can try to record a video of it later today when I drive back home. Mine mostly comes from the rear passenger side door speaker. I'm pretty sure it's the screws on the door panel that are becoming loose. I've seen the mobile tech work on it and he showed me the issue. Every time they tighten it up, within an hour, it gets loose again. I don't understand how.. But I am going to ask them to replace the entire panel this time just to see if that fixes the issue.

Nothing a bit of blue Loctite won't fix.

I made a post awhile ago about how I fixed the speaker rattle myself. The overall consensus is that Rivian service never actually fixes the rattle. It usually almost always comes back at some point.
