Two other things that can affect the efficiency...
1) Using adaptive cruise control consistently, not popping in and out of it all the time.
2) Wind - Sounds silly, but the wind can have a big impact.

I just did a 5 hour trip, three times last week, and averaged between 2.3 and 2.5 on my R1T DM Large with 21s. I stayed in cruise control for hours at a time and kept it between 70 and 75. Thats somewhere between 300 and 320 miles of range, a lot farther than my bladder will take me!

BCondrey,
I like your bladder comment. LOL! I have a Buc-es on my trips and I stop every time to charge my Y and take a bladder break.

So I did the 70 mph range test on conserve this morning. I ran from 100% down to 2% and got 324 miles => 330 miles. Adding in the buffer the total range is ~335.

  • Michelin Defender tires on the Dune 275/60/R20s
  • Max Pack
  • On Conserve mode
  • Efficiency 2.43 mi / kwh
  • Temps ranged 55 - 73 degrees during the drive
  • Elevation 50ft - 150ft
  • Ran 2x separate speedometer apps to validate speed 71 mph on Rivian = 70 on both apps

Appreciate you taking one for the team but hope you were going somewhere that requires driving the distance.

When can we expect true 500 mile range in a broad range of environments and speeds?

I drove a few hundred miles in freezing temperatures @70-75mph and averaged 1.4 m/kwh. One of the worst road trips I experienced because it required 4 charges each way.

Range in winter is a big problem, I otherwise love the R1S.

My guess is at least 10 years. Not a lot of people need 500 mile range in freezing temps (700 miles in warm temps).

One other note, the speedometer apps validated the odometer switching to the 33" diameter wheels from the 34" pirellis. So that works great.

Also stating the obvious but the 2.43 mi per kwh x 141 kwh max pack = 343 miles. If I had actually run to zero it might have gotten the extra 8 miles. Would not surprise me. My key take-away is that the in-vehicle mi/kwh looks to be very accurate and a 100 mile test run will give you good data x 141 pack size.

I am going to run my 88 mile loop on all-purpose next weekend just to see how much difference there is at steady freeway speeds. I expect not much.
Thank you for doing that, can't wait for your AP mode test.

update on the Phx to SD trip. Yuma to Alpine, holy wind Batman. Wasn’t pretty. Drives like this is why I went max pack.
I hear ya. I went from Utah to CA on Monday and it was the single worst drive I've had yet on my Gen 2 R1S, and I've done over a half-dozen 1200 to 3000 mile road trips since getting it, averaging anywhere from 2.5 to 2.8 mi/kwh per trip. I think the final round trip average this past weekend was 2.02 mi/kwh. Punctuated by massive wind noise. Yowza.
