I was invited a couple weeks ago and keep checking inventory and it is overflowing with trucks (>30), especially if you like white. I wonder if this is a good sign (yippie production is at full tilt) or a bad sign (these are orphans)?

My R1S shop shows 1 GW and 7 LG (mix of FE and BM) that I have not really seen move. There must be a lot of OC hold outs (hint hint Rivian :) ) atleast in my region.

Are all the ones not moving over $80k? I would guess the market for $81k vehicles is almost nonexistent right now- no tax credit.

The MSRP cap for 2023 is probably a good explanation. Also might explain Rivian’s rush to get those Enduro motors going.

I bet there’s quite a few people asking to delay their orders if they are worried about the economy or their individual job situation.

Context. 30 trucks is less than three hours of factory production. A drop in the bucket.

Any explanation of why these are in the shop rather than being delivered directly to pre-order holders is pure speculation. But IMO a lot has to do with Rivian allowing people to switch configurations at any time, multiple times. I think their production schedules are less flexible than that (batching), so they get stuck with extras when people change their configuration, or pick up a different configuration from the shop. I think this is one of the reasons that Rivian has started to lock configurations well in advance. There are of course some who cancel for whatever reason, and some trucks that couldn't be shipped immediately because they needed extra work, but MOST of us have changed our configurations once or twice or a hundred times, so if even a tiny fraction of those changes result in a truck that can't be matched, that could explain the entire lot. Regardless, the number that end up in the shop is only a small fraction of the production.

If you're looking for a good/bad answer, I would say it's a good sign that Rivian set up the shop to deal with the mis-match between actual production and actual orders, and it's a good sign that the shop seems to have high turnover - the same vehicles aren't sitting there week after week (based on what I saw when I had access to the store for two months in the fall). I also think it's a good sign that they are working to reduce the mis-match by locking in configurations early. I think the number of R1 vehicles "on the lot" is way fewer than with a traditional manufacturer, so the cost of this inventory is way less. And I think that the shop will become much less important as the backlog of orders gets eaten away by the production ramp.

For anyone still having pre March 2022 pricing all the ones I saw were less than $80k. The more interesting part was how few actually had the underbody shield. I saw my config come up a few times without the shield, but it's required for my use.

I noticed the same thing...either those with the shield are immediately snapped up or they put the shield on fewer than one in five.

Personally, I could forego the shield if either 1) comparably priced aftermarket options were imminent or 2) I wasn't a worrier by nature. Right now I have to take a UTV to get to some trail heads and everytime I catch a big rock that launches itself into the undercarriage, I cringe.

A $79.5K list R1T with 6k miles just sold on Bring A Trailer for $73k. I would guess the backlog of orders maybe dwindling very fast....

I'm not sure what to think. I'm slotted for a May/June delivery (R1S), but my guide just told me today I may not even be matched to a vehicle until mid-late June. He also said I probably won't get access to the shop until after I'm already matched, so it's a moot point.

I have the same May-June window as you but got R1S shop access last week. I don't ask for it, it just showed up. Ask your guide why he can't hook you up if you are flexible on config.

I'm not a launch edition though, probably the reason why I don't have access yet.

getting the dual motors is not going to change the price materially for those who ordered before 3/1/21. go to the configurator and config a dual motor, you'll see youre paying the same if not more than the quad pre-3/1 price hike. and they've said anyone who is pre-3/1 order who switches to dual will then being paying the regular, current price for your vehicle.
