Thanks everyone. I think I need to see the different trims in person to be able to decide. I need to hear the stereo, I need to see and feel the headliner, dash, door materials as well as the color differences and feel the ventilated seats before I can decide but all the info is helpful.

Adventure for me. The number one selling point is sound system, second point is ventilated seats, icing on the cake is all the cosmetics like ashwood, patterned stitching on seats, headliner / floormats and yellow accents.

Perforated seats are in the con column, but the Explore package appears to have them as well - just without the fan trying to blow air thru them.
Why do you view the perforated seats as a con? more difficult to clean?

Yep.
All those little holes tend to collect "stuff"
Like the food sprinkle that is not lodged in my car seat from this weekend.... ?

Have pre order reservation for Explore with Max Pack but considering if Adventure is worth the extra $5000. Seems like the only things missing from Explore (not counting upgrade items) are: No Power tonneau cover, No Gear Guard, No bluetooth speaker, No ventilated seats, and No passenger seat lumbar adjustment. Not sure these are worth the $5K. Not sure the upgraded items add a lot for me. I'm sure the standard entertainment system is better than what I'm used to and I'm ok with the standard interior trim. The power tonneau cover is most interesting to me but there have been lots of comments about it not working. I would like to see both the power and manual tonneau covers. Any thoughts about the tonneau covers? Is there anything else the Adventure has that the Explore doesn't have?

I'm hoping gear guard turns into a true dashcam/sentry mode competitor in time. The ventilated seats should help offset any sun coming in through the glass roof without as much of a drain as the AC. The tonneau cover seems like it may be an issue long term with reliability so I could take or leave. A bluetooth speaker is the most worthless feature as I have enough of them lying around.

I went with Explore R1S since with tax the difference is near $6000 and while I would kiss the black headliner, the enhanced stereo and wood on the dash that is not enough for such an increased outlay.

The yellow accents are nice, both seat designs look good, the floor mats are irrelevant to me as I will get true all weather ones to protect the carpet and I don’t scare about painted side mirror caps.

Just an FYI, not sure is you saw that it’s expected that explore will start production about 3 months later than adventure. Might not matter depending on when you ordered.

If the Tonneau is the only thing of interest, I'd definitely go with the explore trim. That being said, you know the tonneau on the explore trim is a fold-up cover that would get put into the gear tunnel and doesn't mannually retract. Right?

Agreed, I ordered this past October so I don’t expected delivery until mid 2023

I was going to get the lower spec but the ventilated seats and wood trim were appealing to my partner. And I’ll always go for a better stereo although I don’t really know what the base stereo is like.

I’d actually rather not have the powered tonneau cover which will inevitably break quickly. But the rest of the options are good.

Gear guard upgrade may end up as a part of a paid service.

I can see medical establishment referring to this Rivian owner condition as FATH (Frozen Ass, Toasted Head). I have never experienced ventilated seats but since most who have rave about it and my wife has issues with forced air, this is the only feature that has a bit of FOMO for me.

I agree On Tonneau cover. When it does work, it sounds like it is being tortured and begging to be put out of it’s misery.

BT Speaker is dead weight most of the time.

I am going with R1S Explore. Rivian has to intentionally screw up the sound system on Explore so that is not good enough for me. I doubt they would do that on a $70K SUV. Controlling the noise is a much bigger factor in my experience of sound.

I like as much of the interior in front of me dark and mat so Explore dash works for me nicely. A good contrast with Ocean Coast as well.

All that said, I am far enough in back of the line that I am hoping to have an educated decision about the trims and options by comparing them in person before my purchase.

I wasn't aware the R1S comes with carpet. I know the R1T doesn't, unless they've changed along the way. I thought they were using a heavy vinyl, but I may be wrong about that as well. Anyone know?

"Rivian has avoided using carpet, instead it’s using an easy-to-wash material that won’t stain. The company wants you to get this car dirty, and then just wipe it down before you start all over again."

it may be a synthetic material, but I would call it "carpet" even if it's a more outdoorsy version.
