Advice for winter tires?

I would go with the 20” ATs and see how you like them. If you feel they stink you can swap for something else but my guess is they will be fine. I drive in snow and ice a lot in the winter in the Sierras and have always used ATs (Falken Wildpeak and Toyo Open Country) and they have performed flawlessly for me. They have the same 3-peak mark as the Scorps that come on the Rivian. I didn’t have my Rivian last winter but I have zero doubts about running the ATs this winter.

Also... the only wheels I've seen online that are aesthetically up to par with the Rivian wheels are equally as expensive as the wheel/tire combos from the gear shop!

I like to have a dedicated set of snow tires and rims. So, I went with these rims from Tirerack, Rivian TPMS’s, and Nokian LT3 studded snow tires (LT275/65 R 20 126/123 Q).

(I just noticed that the delivery date for the wheels has been pushed out since I bought mine .)

A buddy of mine has the Nokian LT3’s tires on his truck (not a Rivian) and swears by them. Even though they’re studded, they are a lot quieter than I expected them to be.

We live in BC and frequently travel over the infamous Duffy and Coquihallla passes, (https://www.dangerousroads.org/north-america/canada/4008-coquihalla-highway.html). So, ice performance is top of mind for us.

The folks on this forum are looking for the safest/best options for winter travel. Now if we could just get the “I’m okay with my all seasons” crowd to buy into 3 Peak or dedicated winter tires we’d all be safer and better off.

Hello, I drive mostly around vancouver with several trips to whistler in winter, try to stay off coqhihalla, used to drive it a lot but it’s become filled with crazy drivers and they create dangerous situations even when I am driving correctly for current conditions, wondering if the AT20’s will be adequate for whistler trips? Getting my R S in two weeks!

We live in Whistler. If I wasn’t driving over the Duffy and Coq pretty much weekly and mainly running back and forth to Whistler from the Lower Mainland, I’d stick with the Scorpion AT20’s and skip the winter tires. The Scorpion‘s look like they will be a pretty good snow tire. YRMV

For me it’s all about being safer on ice.

I haven't driven the R1T on dedicated winters yet but I typically get snows for my other cars. I was impressed by how well the stock 20s did last winter but I'm now down to 7/32" of tread from last winter around 11-12/32 and am worried I won't be as happy this year.
Soo... Food for thought but on your fresh 20s you probably be okay!

They weren't testing on a Rivian, but I just found this video that puts some numbers on the performance of the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus relative to other AT tires, an all-season road tire, and a real winter tire.

The only non-studded ones I found online that had the correct load ratings, max PSI, and were not backordered, were Hankook tires on SimpleTire.com:

This is a VERY useful thread. I’m about to take delivery of an R1S from the shop and I’m trying to make the best decision regarding range and highway comfort/noise. It’s clear that the hive mind says the 21’s aren’t ideal in winter (Minnesota here) but how much comfort and quiet will I give up if I get the 20’s out of the gate?

Those are very well priced! On the link I included to the evsportsline site, I realized afterwards there is a pulldown option for aftermarket sensors, which are cheaper ($240/4 instead of $380/4 for the OEM ones), and ended up ordering the aftermarket ones. Still twice as expensive as these on Amazon, nice find.

Are they inferior in any way to the ones on the evsportsline site? Otherwise it's just smart to buy the cheaper ones ;-).

there’s really no difference. i went with the ones from tire rack for my winter setup so they could just install them. they were third party, $70 each
