Air-Conditioning not cold enough - Will I be charged if it's "within spec"?

My 23 R1S Quad is scheduled for service next week. On hot days the A/C does not comfortably cool the cabin. It just can't keep up, on auto or with recirculate on or off. It's much worse than my Chevy Volt and 20 year old Hyundai. Something is wrong or the A/C is crap. Most times though it's fine.

Of course this is a subjective thing and I have a feeling the problem will be dismissed as: "it's 100 degrees, of course it's not cooling as fast". And after some number of days waiting I'll be told it's "within spec". They may have a hard time reproducing the issue if it's not really hot.

If the SC finds nothing wrong, will I be billed for a service visit? Assuming it will be in there a few days or a week, will I also be billed for the rental?

One of the big things I noticed is you need to turn the 3rd row off and it increases the output. The cabin and the glass roof is very large. It takes much longer on my R1S then my T to cool cabin.

I can’t speak specifically to what they will do if they find no issues, but there should be no charge. I recall discussions here last summer about AC performance issues. There are threads here discussing that Rivian admitted to customers they had problems in 2023 imstalling the proper refrigerant charge during vehicle build.

There’s a ton of of people reporting that after the last update, the HVAC sucks ass. Taking 10-15 minutes to even spit out cold air. An already suspect HVAC now has a software problem

Would be interesting to know the ratio going to the battery vs the cabin at any given time.

Has anyone put a thermometer in the vent?

I remember the days of "360 degree air conditioning", where we opened 3 windows (driver, passenger, and sunroof), and drove at 60 MPH. What privileged society we have become.

Not saying there isn't an issue w/ the A/C keeping up, just that the things we complain about on this forum are often such 1st world problems.

I understand what you are saying, There are just some occasions (and it's inconsistent) that the AC just blows and it never really gets cold. It's consistently 90 degrees during the day at this time of year and I drive at a similar timeframe and there is an occasional inconsistent performance. Most days it's fine.

Sometimes it just kind of starts working all of a sudden 15 minutes into the drive, and once in awhile it wont work correctly until the next time I drive.

I know there was a coolant overcharging issue out of the factory in 2023 at least in the R1Ts, but when I had that issue, it was pretty consistently not working.

it’s a forum about expensive vehicles. The whole forum is “first world” topics lol

The people here spent a pretty big chunk of money on a vehicle that at times doesn’t do basic things as well as cars 1/3 the price. I think it’s fair to complain.

I took mine in about a month ago for the same reason. There was a sensor somewhere that went wonky. They replaced that (after 7 days ) and all is well again now.

Numerous studies have shown that driving around with the windows down reduces range at any speed over 25 mph.

I've noticed this in my car as well. Had it sitting outside and the cold air didn't start coming out until 10 minutes later when I was already home.

Same issue for me but it’s intermittent. Only started happening after the latest software update.

There are a ton of related posts/reports going on. I currently have one reproducible problem; when my truck is on a AC EVSE, it will fail to cool. It sometimes shows a message about the AC charger being insufficient. I've used three EVSEs.

I *also* have a more random change in cabin cooling, and I can hear it move vents around, between cold and suddenly warm/humid. I usually wear smart glasses when I'm out so I got a bunch of video but haven't sent them to Rivian yet.

Similar scenario with my 2024 R1T- takes forever to cool (sometimes) and other times will just randomly switch to warm humid air blowing from vents- it's maddening

Assume all this started after the latest update? Mine was great before this recent update.
