I always have my recirculation air button turned on. It’s the button with the circle arrow, that’s located right above the “sync” button which I also have turned on.

but I noticed when I go into park, the recirculation will turn off (button becomes white). Why does it turn off when I park? When I go back into drive, it will turn on (button turns to black). Can you keep it always enabled?

I, too, want my recirculation and rear floor vents to stay told.

Typically, in ICE vehicles, recirculation is turned off by default to prevent exhaust getting into the cabin and circulating without a fresh air input. But this does seem odd since there's no exhaust on a Rivian.

My old Volvo would only let you keep recirc on for 15 minutes then it would turn itself off. The salesman told me it's only to be used to evacuate exhaust smells. Once the smell is gone you should turn it off.

That was 21 years ago though. I run recirc most of the time in mine ... Keeps offensive. Smells out.

In your case, I believe maybe rivian has something in software to prevent smells in the AC. When you run recirculation in AC mode it can get pretty wet in there and it that can cause smells like dirty socks or a vinegar type smell. The way to prevent that is after you drive and put it in park to run the fan for several minutes to dry it out. I have a feeling that may be what rivian's trying to do via software to prevent smell from starting.

I think it probably switches to fresh air (in cooling mode) until the inside air is cooler than the outside air. The fastest way to cool an auto is to first exhaust the overheated air inside. If you wait a minute or two, it will probably switch back to recirculate without intervention from the driver. In the times that I have had the climate control screen up at the beginning, it appears to me that it starts in fresh air mode, and then switches to recirculate (automatically).
Note: if you are switching it to recirculate before it automatically switches back to recirculate, you are probably degrading its ability to rapidly cool the cabin.
