Again... depends on state laws governing the insurance companies. CA does not have restrictions on insurance companies on what can be deemed a total.
Agreed. Except for Texas and Colorado, that have 100% requirement, which means repair costs should exceed 100% of residual value to be totaled, in most states the repair costs for a Rivian with moderate damage would be a total loss. Typically it’s more expensive than a luxury vehicle/any vehicle at that price range. Several reasons that have been very well documented and discussed on this forum

I think the insurance companies are trying to develop their own supply of replacement parts. 🤪

Can anyone help me understand this? I received a letter where it was considered a "total loss" but the cost of repair was estimated to be $21K...what am I missing?

There are several factors as others have alluded to.

The most likely scenario is that the Insurance "scam" company believes the total cost to repair will be higher than 50% of the value of the vehicle. $21k is probably not enough to get the vehicle repaired and back on the road. At this time EVs lose a large part of the value very quickly in the first 1-3 years. So assume your vehicle is worth 50% what you paid for it and 50% of that is the max the insurance company will want to pay to get it repaired instead of totaling it.

The previous sentence is not an exact, 100% error free post. Just showing how they can get to a point where they total your car versus repairing it.

What's your best guess? I'm worried I'm SOL

I would be surprised if it isn’t. There may be a silver lining. There are sellers on Ebay that are selling parts stripped from totalled Rivians. I purchased a rear taillight for less than half the cost of a new one and it looks brand new. If you have the time and the inclination collect your insurance check and tell them you want the vehicle for parts. Just a thought.
