Good morning,
Hope everyone is enjoying the Haloween organ music! I signed the binding agreement for the Rivian in 2022 and got delivery in 2023. I submitted an amended federal return, but it was rejected. Has anyone had success / failure in getting the 7500?

Thanks!!!

Well if you're going to make a claim like this at least tell us *why* it was rejected. It's almost certainly because you filled it out wrong and/or it was incomplete. Lots of other people have had no problem getting the credit with an amended return - simply search the forum and you will see all the other threads.

Good morning,
They actually didn't say why it was rejected. I got a letter stating the amount due was $0. It noted "we made the changes you requested to your 2022 form 1040 to adjust your tax credit. As a result you don't owe us any money, nor are you due a refund." There is then a section that says if you agree, nothing to do, if you don't agree call us. I called and they noted a tax advocate will call me in 30 days. I reached out here to see if this had occurred with anyone else since we are a small community,. The date of purchase I had written was August 15, 2022.

Thank you for the input, sounds like others have had success so hopefully it's an error on my part. I'll keep my fingers crossed and check out more details on the other threads.

This is a non-refundable tax credit so your tax liability had to exceed the refund to get the entire refund. I assume you paid more than 7500 in taxes for 2022 and were under the income limits.

Might want to review this and if you meet all of the criteria contact the IRS, would not be the first time they were wrong.

This is one of the reasons I am thinking I am going to push my delivery out to January. I already got a full refund for 2022. I am not sure it will help me.

WIll have to take to my tax advisor.

There were no income limits under the old rules.

I wouldn't characterize that as a rejection. It's simply saying that the new information you provided doesn't change the amount of tax you owe. Again, the most common thing to look for is that you entered the numbers wrong or didn't provide the necessary forms. Like @Mcdubjr said, if you entered the "placed in service" date wrong then when the IRS processed your form it would use that date (since that is a primary piece of information that you provided) then do its own calculations and determine you're not eligible for the credit.

Go look at the Form 8936 and read the instructions for that form. If you put in the wrong numbers then you can always re-file your 1040X.

Thanks! The placed in service date is August 15, 2022. I'll hold tight until I hear back from them, the person I spoke to that initially reviewed my case when I called the IRS didn't comment on why it didn't change tax liability but said it has to be escalated to a tax advocate who will call. Doesn't sound like I need any additional info when they call me. Thanks for the insight.

I have the limits on my mind, forgot it changed last year.

I got my R1S before March this year, did not want to file an amended return so just making sure I stay under the limits for 2023 and will take the credit this year.

When I had a disagreement with the IRS a few years back, the advocate suggested I ask for the audit record - this is just a copy of a computer printout showing what numbers the IRS used to calculate your taxes. These numbers *should* be the same as the ones you entered on your forms. If they're not, that at least tells you where the your calculations differ from the IRS calculations.

In my case, I had been required to file a paper form (long story) and the IRS scanned a few of the typed numbers wrong (maybe a wrinkle in the paper?). Regardless, after seeing the audit report and checking the numbers I was able to point out to them where *they* had made the mistake, and I finally got my full refund.

If you owed taxes with your return this gives you a credit toward that. It’s not a rebate that pays out if already got a refund.

Thank you, this is helpful.

So instead of amending to get the $7500 on the 2022 tax return, you'll instead try to meet all the requirements for March 2023, which I believe is
  1. Vehicle under 80k.
  2. Income under 150/300/???

I assume you were also pre price increase pricing since I don't think there's a under 80k R1S
