It was an added feature on update. I checked with RIVIAN.
If you only talked to somebody on the phone, I wouldn’t take that as “official”.
I don’t disagree that the wipers turn on sometimes when it is not raining, but it’s not a “perfectly clean” windshield.
Until I see it in the owners manual or a release note, I’m chalking it up to one of two things: 1) your windshield is not as clean as you think or 2) the sensors are malfunctioning.

That should make it easy to share which update this was a part of? Because I’m on the latest software update and mine only do this occasionally if the light hits a dirty windshield just right. Not every time I put it in drive.

This. If it’s an added feature, I want to see when it was added and want to know why my vehicle doesn’t do it. I’m a Connect+ member and get the OTA releases generally on the first day they are publicly available.

Yeah, I'm with you, but also yes, I just turned off Auto. What bugs me about that is having to double-tap the switch to actually traverse the menu. It's just one more thing you have to do while driving. Not a showstopper, but is annoying
Anything requiring more than a quick glance I wait until I am at a stop light or when the road is straight. If I can't wait that long to get a wipe, I just tap the washer button. If I need more than a quick wipe I spray the washer. Washer fluid can actually help effectiveness of wipers.

Aerolon Tech Shine is a good water repelling product for the windshield. It applies easily—simply wipe on with a sponge while vehicle is still wet after washing—and can be applied to the entire exterior. Originally developed for aircraft and lasts longer than wax. And it doesn't harden blades like RainX does.

Yes, there is. You can search it in the forums or talk to a Rivian cs rep. My windshield is brand new and my car is garaged. It’s crystal clear. Still swipes when I put it in gear. So I talked to the mobile guy who told me it’s a courtesy swipe. I then called to see if I can turn it off, they said it’s a feature and cannot be turned off. Both called it the same thing. Search it.
Like, misinformation never happens on the internet? 😆 It’s just hearsay. A name given to describe the undesirable, overly sensitive behavior. Rivian CS reps don't know everything and not the first time they make up things for sake of moving conversation forward or to diffuse a tense customer. CS reps aren’t experts. They are just people working as help desk call center generalists. They aren’t engineers. They aren’t priests. They might not even have ever driven a Rivian.

Believe whatever you like. Bottom line is do you want to solve the problem (and just turn wipers off) or do you just want to keep complaining? If you want to keep complaining, the Rivian mobile app has a "share feedback" button that allow you to complain to the people who are actually paid to hear it; as much as you want. Arguing with us of its existence is a total waste of your time.

They could adjust software and make it less sensitive, but that would most likely affect performance when it's actually raining. Since it is a GPS-enabled and internet connected vehicle, smarter software would be to query local weather. Is it raining? No? No "courtesy" wipe on wake. Yes, it is raining? Wipe away.

oh goodness, please don’t ever connect wipers to anything but something physical on the vehicle.
I can just see it now “I got into a wreck because I couldn’t see out of the windshield…turns out the GPS didn’t think it was raining enough”

You misunderstand. Wasn’t talking about entire duration of drive. Merely for the first few minutes upon wake/entry, to avoid that initial false positive.

Honestly, I hate it. It’s tearing through my wipers to swipe multiple times a day on dry glass, and it’s creating constant smears across my field of view. The only way to turn it off is to turn off auto wipers, but I haven’t had a car without that in a decade. It should be a toggle on if you want it.
Let me guess, you live in a dusty or high pollen area.

There is no such feature as a "Courtesy Swipe".
Uh, yes, there is.
If you think you know everything, then there's nothing you can learn from us. Why did you even bother to ask if you have already made up your mind?

There is no "Courtesy Swipe" feature. Period. If you can't accept that, you won't be able to move on to a solution for your problem.

I have a new 2026 R1S. And there I haven’t seen anywhere where you can set courtesy swipe on or off. And currently I have my wipers in auto and they don’t do a swipe when I get in the truck

Ford has courtesy wipe. After you manually use the windshield washer to clean the windshield the wipers will wipe for a predetermined amount of time. When they quit, courtesy wipe will wipe once more about 10 seconds or so later. This gets the water at the bottom of the windshield that blows up while driving. I’ve had this feature on many Ford vehicles I’ve owned and it can be turned off or on.

I’ve not seen this feature on my Rivian.

I detail my own vehicles, meticulously. I turn the wipers to OFF and don’t turn them on till I actually need them. Your “courtesy wipe” is phenomena from a poorly operating windshield sensor, no matter what Rivian has told you. There really is no rhyme or reason to when the wipers wipe except to piss you off.

I have yet to see auto headlights and auto wipers work “100%" correctly in any vehicle I’ve ever owned, theres been a lot. This includes Mercedes, the king of luxury vehicles. LMAO

Edit: courtesy wiping a dry windshield is asinine. WTF is that going accomplish?

I've heard of a "courtesy flush" but never a "courtesy (s)wipe!"

It's been there for a very long time. It's not a 'courtesy' wipe, it's part of the calibration routine of the rain sensor. Watch this and you'll understand...

What does “auto” mean; and are these
district functions?
1. Automatically enable wipers when rain is detected.
2. Check windshield for debris when starting (clear view for center camera, etc). If detected enable wipers.

Most people would only anticipate 1.
Is 2 separate logic; dust vs rain? Or is it misidentifying static dust as rain, seems unlikely.

if auto wiper is using 2 (or more logical use cases), any of them could be addressed as optional via settings.

Yes. It’s called Planet Earth.
